Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse for the Department of Corrections. As a Corrections Nurse, you will provide advanced nursing care to inmates, collaborate with medical staff, and support health programs.

This full-time role is 40 hours per week with rotating shifts and retirement benefits. You must hold a PA RN license (or obtain within required timeframe) and pass background checks. Telework is not available, and strong record-keeping is essential.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position provides advanced professional nursing care to inmates within a State Correctional Institution. It supports individuals with physical or mental health needs, injuries, illnesses, or disabilities.

• Patient Care: Implement nursing care plans, check vital signs, administer medications, perform treatments, and provide education to support inmate health
• Clinical Support: Assist physicians with examinations and clinics, administer tests and immunizations, and provide counseling and health guidance
• Emergency Response: Perform assessments, deliver emergency care such as first aid, CPR, or AED, and coordinate referrals as needed
• Record Management: Record and retrieve information in the electronic health record, prepare reports, and maintain required documentation
• Supply Maintenance: Sterilize instruments, inventory supplies, and ensure adequate stock in all treatment areas

Work Hours and Additional Information

• Full-time employment.
• 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts; 40-hour work week. Rotating off days.
• The Department of Corrections is staffed by three (3) work shifts that cover the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  • 1st shift: 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM; 2nd shift: 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM; and 3rd shift: 10:00 PM - 6:30 AM
  • Work hours TO BE DETERMINED at time of hiring.
    • Work schedule to be discussed during the interview.
    • Additional hourly Shift Differential paid to those who work 2nd and 3rd shifts.
• This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Please Note: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $89,882.00 (before taxes).

Necessary Special Requirements

• This position requires active authorization to practice as a Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania.
• All employees possessing an active temporary practice permit must obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse within the one (1) year period defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Other Requirements

• PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
• If you are within 60 days of graduating from a school of nursing approved by the State Board of Nursing, you are eligible to apply for this job posting. At the time of appointment to a position, you must show proof of possession of a current, valid PA temporary practice permit or PA Registered Nurse license.
• Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
