Job summary

Swedish Hospital in Evanston, IL, seeks an RN SANE for the Emergency Department to perform medical-forensic exams for adult/adolescent survivors, delivering compassionate, timely care and coordinating with ER physicians, law enforcement, and legal partners.

The SANE conducts head-to-toe nursing assessments, specimen collection, documentation, and forensic photography while ensuring adherence to professional standards and ongoing collaboration with community partners.

Qualifications

• Graduate from nursing program; BSN preferred.
• Current Illinois RN licensure.
• AA SANE training certification approved by Illinois Attorney General.
• Prior forensic nursing experience preferred.
• Proficiency with Epic or willingness to train.

Responsibilities

• Performs duties of SANE with knowledge of forensic collection and trauma-informed care.
• Attends SANE meetings for peer/chart review and compliance.
• Collaborates with ED staff, Violence Prevention Program, police departments, and legal partners.
• Attends courtroom proceedings related to Swedish Hospital sexual assault cases.

Job description

Hourly Pay Range: $36.00 - $55.80. The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Position Highlights

• Position: RN SANE Program
• Location: Evanston Hospital, Emergency Department
• Hours: must work a minimum of 24 hours of available on-call per six-week schedule.

A Brief Overview

The SANE cares for sexual assault Adult/Adolescent survivors while independently performing the medical forensic exams, head to toe nursing assessments, detailed anogenital examination, forensic specimen collection with supportive documentation, and forensic photographic documentation. The SANE must provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department or hospitalized on an inpatient unit. They will work closely with Emergency Room Physicians, survivor advocates, law enforcement, criminal justice officials and civil attorneys.

What you will do

• Performs duties of SANE with knowledge of forensic collection, STIs, medication and vicarious trauma towards the survivor.
• Attends SANE meetings for peer/chart review and information dissemination to ensure compliance and standards according to the Professional Forensic Scopes and Standard Practices, SASETA, and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
• Works collaboratively with the Swedish Hospital Emergency Department, Violence Prevention Program, Illinois State and Chicago Police Departments, Resilience, and the Illinois SANE Coordinator.
• Attends courtroom proceedings related to Swedish Hospital sexual assault cases.

What you will need

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred.
• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
• Successful completion and certification of AA SANE training through the Office of the Illinois Attorney General or certification is approved by the Office of the Illinois Attorney General SANE Coordinator.
• Prior experience in forensic nursing preferred.
• Pass computer literacy for Epic or attend training after hire.
