Job Summary

Sign-on Bonus: $4,000.

Hours: Full-time; 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, Days/Evenings, variable 8-hour and 12-hour shifts.

Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse to work at our clinics at the 112 Southampton Street emergency men’s shelter operated by the Boston Public Health Commission in addition to the Transitions shelter and other sites as dictated by program needs. Travel between sites is required.

This position provides daily nursing support for clinic patients as part of a multidisciplinary team in a highly collaborative environment. Additionally, this position is crucial to assuring that clinically appropriate and timely decisions are made and actions are taken around patient assessments, administering of medications, treatments, and overall patient care. Other responsibilities include educating patients on medication and general health information.

Direct Nursing Care
  • Direct nursing care of patients on assigned Team to ensure all patient needs are met, in conformance with established policies and procedures and Department of Health rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for accurate assessments and documentation, reporting to appropriate personnel as indicated (e.g., on-call provider, nurse manager, Site Manager).
  • Administer medications and treatments to all patients assigned, ensuring skillful and correct delivery and documenting per policy; observe and report any adverse reactions.
  • Update and maintain accurate treatment records, flow sheets, and vaccine administration entries, observing and reporting any adverse reactions.
  • Provide nursing activities related to primary care clinical operations at BHCHP primary clinic settings, including direct care, nursing case management activities, immunization, and screenings.
  • Provide triage and nursing assessment of walk-in and scheduled patients as directed.
Communication
  • Give and receive reports at change of shift; cross‑train at other clinics to check narcotics and related drug supplies per policy; sign appropriate forms.
  • Take orders accurately, per policy.
  • Maintain a professional approach with confidentiality.
  • Maintain standards of accurate and complete recording and reporting to ensure each patient’s clinical record is current and accurate.
Education and Training
  • Educate patients as needed, covering topics such as TB, HIV, and medications to promote physical and mental well‑being.
  • Participate in orientation and in‑service training for personnel, student nurses, and other health professionals as indicated.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support and attend mandatory in‑service education programs as per facility protocol.
  • Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed to meet program needs at the discretion of the Nurse Manager or Director of Nursing.
Qualifications
  • Commonwealth of Massachusetts RN license.
  • Minimum of 2 years nursing experience preferred.
  • Experience with underserved populations preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Hourly rate ranges from $40.00 to $58.00, increasing based on years of experience.
  • Full‑time employees are eligible for a competitive time‑off program, health, dental and vision insurance, 403(b) retirement savings plan, pre‑tax MBTA pass program with 40% discount, and additional compensation for demonstrated bilingual proficiency. Benefits are prorated for part‑time employees.
