Job description

Position Summary

Registered Nurse (RN) role at Samaritan Healthcare, a Washington Trauma Level III hospital. The RN is responsible for a designated group of patients, implementing the Nursing Process, and working closely with patients, physicians, and other clinicians to ensure optimal patient care and outcomes. This full‑time position requires 36 hours per week, primarily nights with rotating weekends and holidays (7:00 pm–7:30 am). The RN reports to the Charge Nurse, Department Director, and other supervisory staff on duty.

Extra Incentives
  • Up to $15,000 sign‑on bonus, subject to a two‑year Hospital Sign‑on Advance Agreement (external candidates only).
  • Cross‑trained RNs earn up to $5.00 additional per hour: $2.00 when cross‑trained to two units, $3.50 when cross‑trained to three units, and $5.00 when cross‑trained to more than three units.
Specific Accountabilities
  • Performs assessment/data collection focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, and cognitive status.
  • Implements care in a knowledgeable, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner by adhering to predetermined procedures, policies, and care plans.
  • Identifies patient/significant‑other learning needs, readiness for learning, and implements patient teaching as defined by policy and care plans.
  • Documents in the patient’s chart via electronic medical records and/or paper processes per policy and all regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient/significant‑other and family rights, identified by Samaritan Healthcare regardless of race, age, religion, color, creed, sex, national origin, or any other classification protected by law; and regardless of ability to pay.
  • Demonstrates appropriate delegation of patient care activities and effectively supervises assigned coworkers.
  • Demonstrates effective organization and priority setting using sound critical thinking.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of lines of authority.
  • May function as a Charge Nurse, delegating patient assignments, assisting with admits, discharges, and transfers, coordinating staff coverage, helping staff problem‑solve, and serving as a lead for the unit.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to stay abreast of latest trends in the field of expertise.
  • Functions with awareness of and adherence to safety requirements, including security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, and safe lifting and body mechanics.
  • Ensures self‑compliance with organization policies, procedures, and labor agreements.
  • Ensures respectful and courteous interface with team members and other support groups in a manner congruent with the organization’s values.
  • Conducts oneself in a professional manner, maintaining a personal appearance that meets job standards while representing the organization.
  • Handles additional accountabilities as required by management in a manner that meets organizational standards.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Washington State RN licensure.
  • Experience as an acute‑care registered nurse preferred; a minimum of one year of RN experience preferred for specialty nursing departments.
  • Ability to perform the primary functions of an RN in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of all assigned patients.
  • HCP Level of BLS (Basic Life Support) within 30 days of hire – AHA or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications & Competencies
  • Need to obtain all certifications applicable to the nursing units to which the RN has been trained.
  • AWHONN’s Advanced Fetal Monitoring course is required only for labor‑trained RNs caring for pregnant patients.
  • NRP (AAP Neonatal Resuscitation Program) is required only for labor‑trained RNs caring for pregnant patients.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
  • Manual dexterity and light physical effort; ability to lift/carry up to 30 lbs. (supplies and equipment). Manual dexterity of hands and feet to ambulate 8–12 hours per shift and manage multiple pieces of equipment/tubes/invasive lines.
  • Physical strength to perform CPR (bed/floor), lift and push/pull 60–300 pounds (with assistance) as often as 20 times per 8–12 hours and perform constant walking, twisting, turning, and stretching during patient care and equipment use.
  • Keen mental faculties for assessment and decision‑making in managing acutely ill patients.
  • Good reading eyesight; able to see clearly 20 feet or more, judge distance and space relationships, and see peripherally. Visual acuity to observe patient assessment data and use manual/automated documentation tools.
  • Emotional stability for high‑stress levels over 8–12 hours, dealing with acute patients/families, fast‑paced activity, rapidly changing conditions, and emotional demands.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and/or in writing for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health‑care professionals, patients, families, and the public.
