Clinical Nurse I

Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs. Assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Provides direction, education, and acquires leadership skills at the unit level. Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Clinical Nurse II

Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Mobilizes resources to meet individualized needs of patients/families. Provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level. Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Clinical Nurse III

Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies it to a specific patient population. Assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting. Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration
  • Requirements for Hire: Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state.
  • Requirements for Continued Employment: Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
Experience
  • Required – Clinical Nurse I: N/A; Clinical Nurse II: 12 to 24 months RN experience; Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience.
  • Preferred – Clinical Nurse I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in acute care or applicable area; Clinical Nurse II & III: Academic health care experience; experience with similar patient population in acute care or applicable area.
Education / Training
  • Required – Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized by the state Board of Nursing. RN without a Bachelor’s required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete within five years unless grandfathered.
  • Preferred – Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program. Clinical Nurse III: Certification in specialty area.
Independent Action and Practice

Follows documented physician or licensed provider orders. Practices within Virginia nursing regulations, guided by the ANA Code of Ethics and national nursing standards. All practice follows VCUHS policies and procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.

Shift Requirements

Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules coordinated with Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Schedules may be adjusted as needed.

  • Age specific groups served: As appropriate based on unit assignment.
  • Physical: Lifting 20–50 lbs. Activities: prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching.
  • Mental/Sensory: strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking.
  • Emotional: fast‑pace environment, steady pace, multi‑priority handling, frequent intense interactions, noisy environment.
