Job summary

St. Joseph’s Health, part of Trinity Health, is seeking a PACU nurse for a full-time, rotating day/evening schedule with weekend on-call duties in Syracuse, NY. The role focuses on preoperative assessment, airway management, anesthesia recovery, and safe patient transitions through perioperative care.

Ideal candidates hold RN licensure in New York and a BSN is preferred. BLS/CPR certification is required, CNOR/CPAN are a plus, with 1–2 years of relevant perioperative experience.

• 1–2 years of Pre-Op, PACU or perioperative nursing experience.
• On-call availability and ability to work rotating shifts.

Responsibilities

• Assess and prepare patients for surgery and review medical history.
• Monitor patients preoperatively to ensure stability before surgery.
• Provide immediate post-anesthesia care and monitor vitals.
• Educate patients/families on post-op care and recovery.
• Demonstrate strong assessment, critical thinking and patient advocacy.

Description:

PACU hours 6am-1130pm with on call requirement. And 1 weekend every 4th weekend.

At St. Joseph’s Health the Surgical Services Department records more than 11,000 surgeries annually in our state-of-art operating rooms providing a full range of surgical services, offering care for ambulatory, elective, and critically ill patients. The PACU is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to patients before and after surgical procedures, ensuring safe transitions between preoperative and post-anesthesia care phases.

What you will do:

• Assess and prepare patients for surgery, including reviewing medical history and administering preoperative medications.
• Monitor patients in the Pre-Op area, ensuring they are stable and ready for surgery.
• Provide immediate post-anesthesia care, monitoring vital signs and assessing for complications.
• Educate patients and families on post-operative care, discharge instructions, and recovery expectations.
• Strong assessment, critical thinking, and patient advocacy skills along with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond quickly to changing patient conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Education: Graduate of an accredited college or university affiliated nursing program. BSN graduate preferred.
• Licensure: Current Licensure as a Registered Nurse RN in New York.
• Certification: BLS/CPR. CNOR or CPAN certification a plus.
• Experience: Minimum of 1- 2 years’ experience in Pre-Op, PACU, or Surgical/Perioperative Nursing

Work Schedule:

Full time – 40 Hour Day/Evening Rotating Shift

Pay Range:

$38.75 - $54.85 Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
