Job Summary

This position is responsible for assessing the needs of each patient before and during a surgical procedure and maintains patient safety. The RN outlines individual care plans, implements, evaluates and documents care of patient during surgical procedures. Provides leadership to the OR team. Communicates with the patient and family, OR team, supervisor, manager and ancillary departments. Participates in staff development through preceptorship and continuing education.

Responsibilities

• (40%) Assesses the needs of the surgical patient and develops a plan of care specific for that patient. Implements and evaluates the plan of care during the procedure and makes necessary adjustments keeping patient safety a priority.
• (30%) Supervises activity in the room. Anticipates and coordinates any schedule changes for the room. Assembles equipment and supplies. Assists anesthesia as necessary. Monitors sterile field.
• (20%) Communicates with patient, family, physician, OR team, supervisor/manager, and ancillary departments.
• (10%) Participates in staff development by attending in‑services, educational meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings/seminars for educational opportunity along with leadership and growth opportunity.

Certifications and Licensure

• BLS: Basic Life Support
• RN: Registered Nurse

Education

• Associate’s Degree in Nursing required.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred with 12 months experience.

Experience, Training and Skills

• One year nursing experience or perioperative experience.
• Leadership skills needed to effectively direct a group.
• Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
• Two years of nursing experience either in the critical units or emergency department preferred.
• Certified Surgical Tech (CST) with RN license or first assistant with RN license preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Windows.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex or appropriate substitute.

Must be able to move freely about facility with or without assistance and perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing are mandatory, with or without assisted device(s).

Must frequently sit/stand/walk for long periods of time, including frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must comply with bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain attendance and stay awake.

Overall dexterity required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling; may require repetition of these movements regularly.

Must be able to occasionally lift or carry 21‑50 lbs, frequently 20 lbs, and continuously 10 lbs during the workday.
