Overview

Location and Schedule

Location: Lancaster, PA – Lancaster General Hospital
Hours: Full time (36 hours per week). Evening shift (3 pm‑3 am) with every third weekend and rotating holidays.

Unit Description

The Observation Unit is a fast‑paced 52‑bed unit for medical and surgical patients requiring short‑term care with anticipated discharges of 24‑48 hours. Primary diagnoses include chest pain, Afib, hypertension, PE/DVT, abdominal pain, trauma, TI/CVA, CHF, asthma/COPD, vertigo, electrolyte abnormalities, syncope, hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia, and pre/post‑procedure care.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Assume responsibility and accountability as defined by the American Nurses Association standards of nursing practice.
  • Act as a full partner on the health care team, consistently demonstrating safe practice within the professional practice model.
  • Provide patient care through the application of the nursing process and accept accountability for assigned patients ranging from infancy to the elderly.
  • Work closely with the interprofessional team to coordinate care across the continuum and to facilitate patient education on healthy practices and treatment modalities.
  • Implement care within the competency domains of Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence Based Practice, Leadership, Person and Family Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Technology Informatics, and Teamwork.
  • Provide leadership by effectively communicating expected standards of care and supporting team members.
  • Seek and provide feedback to improve clinical practice and demonstrate how nursing practice impacts organizational vision, mission, and goals.
  • Comply with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies.
Essential Duties
  • Integrate the Lancaster General Health mission, vision, and values into patient care planning.
  • Perform patient assessments focusing on physiologic, psychological, and cognitive functions, evaluating progress and adapting plans of care.
  • Collect, manage, and analyze comprehensive data to determine diagnoses, formulate culturally and ethically sensitive plans of care, and implement care across multiple disciplines.
  • Lead others by setting standards, encouraging contributions, and ensuring continuity of care through appropriate use of resources.
  • Educate patients about healthy practices and treatment modalities.
  • Enhance quality and effectiveness of nursing practices, utilizing technology as appropriate and considering factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • RN licensure issued by the PA Board of Nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher-level nursing degree.
  • Completion of the Nurse Residency Program or more than 15 months of practice.
  • Current CPR certification (American Heart Association Basic Life Support).
  • Good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs (not excluded from participation).
  • As outlined in the unit‑based Plan for Provision of Care.
