Job summary

MyMichigan Health is seeking a registered nurse (RN) to provide direct patient care in a fast-paced environment. The role includes triage, taking patient history and vital signs, and initiating immediate care for emergencies.

Overview

The Registered Nurse (RN) functions primarily in direct patient care and demonstrates competent clinical practice. The role includes triaging patients, obtaining patient history and vital signs, and assessing patients. The RN acts independently to initiate immediate care in life‑threatening situations, provides care for both acutely ill and non‑acute patients, performs multiple procedures with complex and simple nursing skills, assists physicians with procedures, and provides physical and psychological comfort to patients, families, and visitors. The RN provides discharge and follow‑up instructions, answers ambulance radios, gives appropriate orders for pre‑hospital care, works with sophisticated equipment, and handles various patients in a frequently stressful environment.

Responsibilities

(25%) Performs nursing assessments, intervenes appropriately and promptly, and participates in care planning.

(25%) Regularly assesses patients’/client’s needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician‑authorized plan of care and accepted standards of nursing practice.

(20%) Processes physician/provider orders accurately, completely, and in a timely manner, and follows up regarding medication changes and order clarifications.

(15%) Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or facilitates changes to improve patient care.

(15%) Actively participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information.

• Uses physical assessment techniques (auscultation, percussion, palpation, observation) to identify patients’ physical problems and care needs.
• Recognizes self‑limitations and seeks appropriate resources.
• Possesses clinical competence in airway management, cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, blood gas analysis, venipuncture, and physical assessment.
• Reassesses patient health status and identifies significant changes in condition.
• Individualizes plan of care.
• Coordinates prescribed plans with orders on the health care team.
• Communicates pertinent aspects of care to patients, families, or other health care workers.
• Initiates home health referrals when appropriate.
• Sets priorities and implements nursing measures that correlate with identified plan and standard of care.

Required Education

Associate degree in Nursing.

Experience, Training and Skills

• Knowledge of nursing skills normally acquired through two years of experience in the medical center or a similar setting.
• Weekend RN positions require a minimum of two years’ experience.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

• Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
• Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex or an appropriate substitute.
• Ability to move freely throughout the facility, with or without an assistive device, and perform job functions as outlined.
• Overall vision and hearing necessary, with or without assistive devices.
• Frequent sitting, standing, walking for long periods; may require stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
• Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing required.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay alert.
• Overall dexterity required, including handling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive movements.
