Job description

Where critical care expertise meets flexibility, depth, and purpose.

Critical care nursing demands precision, resilience, and sound clinical judgment. At UVA Health, those qualities are not only recognized but intentionally cultivated. The Critical Care Float Pool Registered Nurse role offers experienced ICU nurses the opportunity to practice across multiple high acuity environments while maintaining schedule flexibility and strong clinical support. This is a role for nurses who want to broaden their skill set, remain clinically sharp, and contribute meaningfully to patient outcomes within a nationally respected academic medical center.

At UVA Health, float pool nurses are not peripheral resources. They are trusted clinical partners who bring experience, adaptability, and calm to complex care environments. Whether you are seeking full time consistency or part time balance, this role is structured to support both professional growth and sustainability in critical care practice.

The Role

As a Critical Care Float Pool RN, you will deliver advanced, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill adult patients across multiple intensive care units at UVA Health University Medical Center. This role is designed for nurses with a strong critical care foundation who value clinical variety, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuous learning.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide direct patient care to high acuity ICU patients, including those requiring advanced monitoring, ventilatory support, and vasoactive medications
  • Float between adult critical care units based on patient needs, staffing requirements, and your validated competencies
  • Collaborate closely with intensivists, fellows, residents, advanced practice providers, and experienced ICU nursing teams
  • Apply strong assessment skills, clinical judgment, and prioritization in fast paced and complex situations
  • Support patients and families through critical illness with professionalism, clarity, and compassion
  • Opportunities for all shifts, full and part-time
What an average day may look like:

You may begin your shift in one ICU today and be assigned to a different Critical Care unit tomorrow. You will integrate quickly into the care teams, managing complex patients and contributing meaningfully from the start. Throughout the shift, you will rely on your critical care expertise, adaptability, and communication skills to deliver safe, high-quality care while navigating different unit workflows and patient populations. Each day brings variety, challenges, and the opportunity to strengthen your clinical range.

For nurses coming from a critical care background, this role offers structured cross training in multiple critical care specialties, allowing you to expand your expertise while remaining grounded in best practices and supported by experienced teams.
