Job summary

THRIVE in New York State is seeking a Registered Nurse to oversee day-to-day medical needs of program residents. The RN will operate from the nursing station, coordinate and document medical planning, manage medications, schedule appointments, and train staff in medical interventions.

The role requires maintaining HIPAA-compliant medical records, participating in treatment planning, and providing first aid as needed.

Qualifications

• Licensed RN in New York State.
• Experience in Chemical Dependency and/or Mental Health preferred.

Responsibilities

• Insure program residents receive preventive, routine, ongoing, follow up and emergency medical services.
• Assess and coordinate all medical needs of program residents.
• Maintain the health and well-being of all residents.
• Document all medical services provided to residents.
• Communicate with medical service providers, emergency contacts and staff, and document the communication.
• Maintain the medical chart per agency policy, OASAS regulation, HIPAA and 42 CFR.
• Utilize electronic health records to document client services and communication.
• Review medication distribution and documentation.
• Report medication or documentation errors to Clinical Director or designee.
• Ensure all medications are secured, inventoried, and recorded.
• Work with treatment team to develop the medical plan of action.
• Schedule all resident medical care and transport to appointments.
• Provide emergency first-aid and determine if further intervention is needed.
• Engage in clinical programming and health-related trainings.
• Maintain the Nursing station to meet program needs.
• Interact with community resources on health-related issues.
• Serve on QA committees as requested.
• Serve as Health Coordinator for assigned Residential Programs regarding HIV, AIDS, TB, and other communicable diseases.
• Provide medication training to Residential Program staff.
• Support medical-related services (e.g., Buprenorphine).
• Obtain breath and urine samples for AOD testing.
• Administer TB tests.
• Participate in Medical Director/site supervisor on-call rotation.

SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse will oversee the day-to-day medical needs of the program residents in order to maintain their health and well-being. The RN will operate out of the nursing “station” and is responsible for coordination and documentation of all medical planning and implementation. This position will provide medication control, schedule medical appointments, direct first aid when necessary and train and direct staff in all medical interventions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible to insure program residents receive preventative, routine, ongoing, follow up and emergency medical services.
• Assessing and coordinating all the medical needs of program residents.
• Maintaining the health and well-being of all residents.
• Documenting all medical services provided to residents.
• Communicating with medical service providers, resident emergency contacts and program staff, and then documenting the communication.
• Maintaining the medical chart in accordance with agency policy and procedure, OASAS regulation, HIPAA and 42 CFR.
• Utilizing the electronic health record to document client services and communication
• Reviewing the proper distribution and documentation of all medications.
• Reporting any and all medication or documentation errors, as outlined in agency policy and procedure, to the Clinical Director or his/her designee.
• Insuring all prescribed and over-the-counter medications are secured, inventoried, administered and recorded in compliance with agency policies and procedures.
• Work with treatment team to develop the medical plan of action as reflected in the Treatment Plan.
• Responsible for the scheduling of all resident medical care and transport to medical appointments
• Provide emergency first-aid and determine if additional medical intervention is necessary.
• Engage in clinical programming as directed.
• Conduct ongoing health related in-service trainings and classes including but not limited to: STD’s, Nutrition, Birth Control, Personal Hygiene, Cold/Hot weather-related health issues.
• Maintain the Nursing “station” to meet program needs
• Interact with community resources regarding health related issues.
• Serve on Quality Assurance committees as requested.
• Serve as Health Coordinator for assigned Residential Programs by ensuring that education, risk reduction, counseling and referral services are available for residents regarding HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, sexual transmitted diseases and other communicable diseases.
• Responsible for medication training of assigned Residential Program employees.
• Provide support as needed for medical related services, ie. Buprenorphine, etc.
• Obtain breath and urine samples for AOD testing
• Administer TB tests
• Participate in the medical on-call rotation for assigned Residential Programs
• Engage in supervision with the Medical Director and site supervisor
• Performs other duties as assigned or that may develop.
• Management has the right to add or change the duties of this position at any time.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Required: Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
