Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Provides professional nursing care to the Medical Surgical and Emergency room departments. Assists physicians during treatments and examinations of patients. Administers medications per physician order. Performs other therapeutic measures either per physician order or as an independent nursing function. Observes, records and reports as appropriate the symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients. Provides patient education on illness management, disease prevention and health promotion. Communicates with physicians, mid‑level providers, nurse manager, co‑workers as appropriate about changes in the patient’s clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Able to perform general nursing duties in all nursing departments with adequate supervision. Responds to on‑call situations and is expected to be available for on‑call schedules. Willing to take low census when requested.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Knowledge of medications and medication administration based on age and clinical condition.
• Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for the patient’s age.
• Performs head‑to‑toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy, including obstetric, pediatric, geriatric, ER and general population patients.
• Develops nursing plan of care and revises it as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment.
• Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs, age‑specific, and evaluates effectiveness of learning; includes family when appropriate.
• Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to the level of licensure.
• Communicates appropriately and clearly to nurse manager, co‑workers and physicians.
• Consults other departments as appropriate to provide an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
• Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including obstetric, pediatric, geriatric and general population.
• Demonstrates flexibility, organization and ability to function under stressful situations.
• Maintains good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
• Displays honesty and good work ethics.
• Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves them in the formation of the plan of care.
• Documentation meets current standards and policies.
• Assists in orientation of newly assigned or hired personnel as requested.
• Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
• Participates in on‑call schedule/duties and responds as soon as possible, always within 30 minutes.
• Actively participates in the Department’s Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
• Follows all Departmental policies and procedures.
• Follows regulatory outlines provided by the Colorado State Board of Nursing and the Nurse Practice Act, laws, standards and rules.
• Adheres to dress code; appears neat and clean and wears scrubs on a daily basis.
• Completes annual educational requirements as required.
• Maintains facility policy, procedures and standards.
• Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
• Wears identification while on duty and uses the computerized punch‑time system correctly.
• Ensures confidentiality of patient records.
• Attends a minimum of eight nursing staff meetings annually.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

Current state Registered Nurse licensure; ACLS, PALS, TNCC, STABLE and BLS certification. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English; strong written and verbal skills; basic computer knowledge.
