Job summary

Holland Hospital is seeking an experienced OR RN to join our surgical services team in Holland, MI. You will support pre, intra, and post-operative care, ensuring patient safety and high-quality outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of accredited Registered Nursing Program required.
  • Current Michigan RN License required (or completed by end of orientation).
  • Current BLS for the Healthcare Provider required (or completed within 60 days).

Responsibilities

  • Prepares for and assists with surgical procedures; sets up instruments and equipment per surgeon instructions.
  • Observes patients during procedures to detect complications and ensure sterile technique.
  • Positions patients to access the operative field and assists surgeon and anesthesia as needed.
  • Advocates for the patient by communicating status with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Monitors progress of surgery and provides instruments, supplies, or fluids as needed.
  • Transfers patients from operating room to recovery area and assists with dressings.

Job description

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the RN ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality care before, during, and after surgical procedures. This role requires strong clinical judgment, adaptability, and the ability to function in multiple environments while maintaining compliance with established standards of care, policies, and regulatory requirements.

The RN is accountable for coordinating care to achieve optimal patient outcomes, collaborating effectively with surgical, anesthesia, and support teams, and delegating responsibilities as appropriate. Practice must align with the Michigan Public Health Code Act 368 of 1978, Article 15 (Health Occupations), Part 172 (Nursing), and include the ability to provide age-appropriate care across the patient population.

The OR RN performs multiple roles, including surgical setup, circulating nurse, and patient transfer coordination from pre-procedure through post-anesthesia recovery.

Pay Range: $34.00 - $49.18/hour

Employment Type: Full Time, 72 hours every 2 weeks

Schedule: Monday-Friday, one day off per week, mix of 8 and 10 hour shifts (during the 7am to 7:30pm time frame), Occasional weeknight and weekend call required with a 30 minute response time.

Requirements: Graduate of accredited Registered Nursing Program required, Current Michigan RN License (or completed by end of orientation) required, Current BLS for the Healthcare Provider (or completed within 60 days of hire) required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Uses established techniques in preparing for andhelping set upsurgical procedures; provides and sets up necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment fordifferent typesof operations, according to establishedpreference cardsand instructions of the surgeon.

  • Observespatientsduring surgicalproceduresto detectpossible complicationsand/or breaks in sterile technique;able tolocateand gatheremergency equipment and suppliesas needed.

  • Placespatientsinappropriateposition(s)toensureaccess tothe operativefield; adjusts operating table and accessory equipment as may berequired; prepares operative area andassistssurgeonand anesthesia asindicated.

  • Advocates for the patient by communicating with other members of the multidisciplinary team about patient status, and progress of surgical procedure(s) as needed.

  • Observesprogress of surgery; providesadditionalinstruments, supplies or other items as needed; provides and regulatesfluids asindicated.

  • After operation,apply orassistin applying dressings, and transferringpatients, from operating room to recovery room.

IntraoperativeRN
Surgical Preparation andReadiness:
  • Prepares and organizes the OR based on the scheduled procedure,utilizingestablished preference cards and surgeon directives.

  • Ensures all required instruments, supplies, and equipment are available, functional, and properly arranged.

  • Assistswith patient transfer to the OR and supports preoperative preparation, includingpositioning readiness and equipment setup.

Intraoperative Clinical Practice:
  • Performs the circulating nurse role, ensuring adherence to surgical safety standards

  • Positions patients safely tooptimizesurgical access while preventing injury (e.g., pressure injuries, nerve damage).

  • Demonstratesexpertisein aseptic technique and the proper handling and use of surgical instrumentation, supplies, and equipment.

  • Prepares the operative site andassiststhe surgical and anesthesia teams as indicated.

  • Monitors the sterile field and patient condition throughout the procedure, recognizing and responding to complications or breaks in technique

  • Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and providesadditionalinstruments, supplies, fluids, or equipment asrequired.

Patient Safety, Documentation,and Communication:
  • Verifies patient identity, procedure, and surgical sitein accordance withsafety protocols (e.g., time-out procedures).

  • Providesaccurateandtimelyhandoff communication to receiving staff.

  • Coordinates andfacilitatessafe patient transfer from the operating room to PACU or phase II.

  • Completes thorough and compliant documentationin accordance withorganizational and regulatory standards.

Sterility, Safety & Quality Assurance
  • Maintains strict adherence to aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.

  • Ensures a safe surgical environment, including proper handling of instruments, sharps, and equipment.

  • Identifiesand responds to emergency situations, ensuring immediate access to necessary equipment and supplies.

  • Advocates for patient safety by communicating effectively with the multidisciplinary teamregardingpatient status and procedural progress.
