Job summary

UNC Health Care is seeking a Clinical Nurse to join the Operating Room team in North Carolina. The role coordinates and delivers patient care using the nursing process in a hospital surgical setting, reporting to the Nurse Manager/Director.

Responsibilities include administering care under physician direction, planning for patient safety, documentation in the EMR, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal surgical outcomes.

Qualifications

• Must be licensed to practice as an RN in the state of North Carolina or a compact state.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Surgical setting experience preferred (1 year).

Responsibilities

• Administers patient care under physician direction and collaborates with the care team.
• Develops and implements a plan of care to protect patient safety and optimize outcomes for surgical patients.
• Assesses and monitors patients per policy and procedure.
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary team in providing surgical care.
• Documents care in the EMR system before, during and after the surgical encounter.
• Performs instrument and supply counts and ensures patient identification and consent.
• Coordinates specimen delivery to the laboratory and orders tests as appropriate.
• Communicates with patients and families to update the care plan with cultural sensitivity.
• Maintains a safe, clean hospital environment and follows infection control standards.

Summary:
Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital surgical setting.

Responsibilities:

• Administers patient care under the direction of a physician. Identifies and pursues expected patient outcomes in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team. Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with healthcare organization and nursing standards, policies and procedures.

• Develops a plan of care to protect patient safety, prevent injury, and ensure optimal care outcomes. Identifies expected patient outcomes specific to surgical procedures through assessment, implementation, and evaluation of care, in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team. Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.

• Assesses and monitors patients per documented policy and procedure.

• Collaborates with and assists interdisciplinary care team in the provision of surgical care.

• Documents care performed before, during and after surgical encounter in electronic medical recordkeeping (EMR) tool.

• Performs surgical instrument and supply count. Administers interventions during patient movement and positioning in order to prevent injury. Ensures proper patient identification, site marking and surgical consent.

• Collect, label and coordinate delivery of specimens to laboratory as well as order appropriate testing.

• Communicates with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care using cultural competency and active listening. Develops relationships with patients and their families that promote their ability to advocate for patient and family needs.

• Promotes a safe, clean and secure hospital environment for all, including the application of standard precautions and principles of infection control.

• Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina or one of compact states by the day of clinical care.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred

• One (1) year of experience working in a registered nurse role in a surgical setting
