PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Supports the mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy of Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA). Adheres to the FMCNA Compliance Program and all regulatory and policy requirements. Works as part of the hemodialysis health‑care team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with FMCNA policies, procedures and training. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines and for maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities, including patient satisfaction and process‑improvement initiatives to achieve QEP goals.

DUTIES AND ACTIVITIES

CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • Drive the FMS culture through values and customer service standards.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to all external and internal customers.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships through timely communication.
  • Initiate action and follow‑up regarding customer service issues promptly.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Patient Care

  • Assist other health‑care members in patient education regarding adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their well‑being since last treatment; report complaints or observations to the nurse supervisor.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency; report unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
  • Obtain necessary pre‑ and post‑treatment vital signs and weight; report unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and report difficulties or unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
  • Administer Heparin as delegated or per state law.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per orders (QB, QD); evaluate intradialytic problems and intervene as directed.
  • Monitor patient response to dialysis therapy and report changes to nurse supervisor.
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion and perform all relevant functions needed for discontinuation of treatment (including documentation).
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment per established procedures; evaluate patient before venous access termination and record blood pressure.
  • Obtain Hemostasis and apply dressings.
  • Evaluate patient before discharge and report findings to nurse supervisor.
  • Record Pre and Post dialysis evaluation, weight, and vital signs with initial identification.
  • Calculate and enter individual patient dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, Na and UF modeling) as prescribed.
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled (NVL 160).
  • Record vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet; document progress notes if applicable.
  • Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks per facility policy; report changes or unusual findings.
  • Document interventions for unusual patient status and patients’ responses.
  • Obtain laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection.
  • Clean blood spills with appropriate disinfectant per policy.
  • Maintain, organize, and efficiently utilize supplies to prevent wastage.
  • Assist patients performing self‑care under RN supervision.

Maintenance/Technical

  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, chair, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments.
  • Conduct prep tasks for dialysis; test pretreatment alarms (PHT).
  • Initiate Solution Delivery System (SDS).
  • Ensure immediate cleanup of blood spills.
  • Organize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage.

Clerical & Administrative

  • Document CQI participation.
  • Enter treatment data accurately and timely.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness; ensure nursing signatures and correct omissions.
  • Prepare initial patient chart for admission and compile paperwork.
  • Prepare and print lab requisitions; label, store, and ensure proper couriering of specimens.

Other

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Home Therapies Program (Not Home Assist)

  • Assist HT RN with home visits and PD/HHD education under supervision.
  • Schedule and contact patients for appointments.
  • Weigh patients, obtain vital signs, and collect treatment records.
  • Prepare charts and lab tubes; assist with lab draws (PCT certified phlebotomy).
  • Set up home hemo machine and PD Cycler; assist with exit site care.
  • Warm dialysate solution; draw for testing.
  • Send patient reminders and manage supply inventory and ordering.
  • Assist patients with supply management and contact customer service.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Employees must take the Ishihara Color Blindness test; failure does not preclude employment. The role involves desk and computer work, patient interaction, and travel between facilities. The setting is a health‑care environment with moderate noise; exposure to infectious material is possible. Responsibilities include frequent standing, bending, and moving patients; lifting up to 30–40 lbs. A two‑person assist program is available.

Education

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. plus CMS‑approved state or national certification (within required timeline).
  • All appropriate state licensure required.

Experience and Required Skills

  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred.
  • Successful completion of FMCNA dialysis training program and CPR certification required for continued employment.

Hourly Rate: $15.00 – $24.00
