Job summary

Management & Training Corporation's El Valle Detention Facility in Raymondville, TX seeks a dedicated registered nurse to provide compassionate care to detainees in the detention center. You will work with a committed team, attend sick calls, administer medications, maintain medical records, ensure HIPAA compliance, and respond to emergencies as needed in a demanding environment.

The role offers $38.88 per hour with a $1 night shift differential; must hold Texas RN license and CPR certification,

Qualifications

• Degree in nursing and valid RN license in Texas or a compact state.
• Current CPR certification required.
• Must work within Texas State Board of Nursing scope of practice.
• Must successfully complete preservice training.
• Valid Texas driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Attend sick calls with physicians to see detainees and prepare exam rooms.
• Call physicians for medication orders and emergencies.
• Administer medications and document treatment accurately.
• Assess detainees, refer to emergency care when needed, and document in medical records.
• Maintain hygiene and sanitation in the medical unit.
• Practice cost containment and utilization management for detainee care.
• Ensure security and confidentiality of medical records in compliance with HIPAA.
• Monitor for catastrophic illnesses and comply with pharmacy laws.
• Inspect medical unit for contraband and securely store or dispose supplies.
• Perform on-call duties and prepare safety/accident reports as required.
• Chart medical care properly and assist in emergencies and evacuations.

Essential Duties:

• Attend sick call with the physicians to see detainees; prepare examining room and equipment.
• Call the physician for medication and treatment orders and other emergencies.
• Operate pill call, administer medication and accurately and completely document treatment as required by applicable policies and procedures.
• Examine and assess detainees with illnesses or injuries or detainees who become ill or injured; confer with physician to refer detainees to the emergency room as required by their condition and document in medical record or other forms as appropriate.
• Maintain clean work area; use or direct the use of appropriate sanitation methods.
• Practice basic cost containment and utilization management for detainee care and facility operations.
• Maintain absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
• Observe applicable HIPAA rules.
• Review medical files to determine all provided services are documented.
• Closely monitor all potential catastrophic illnesses.
• Comply with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances.
• Inspect medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by detainees; securely store or safely dispose of supplies and equipment.
• Control medication, syringes, or other medical supplies.
• Perform work on an on-call basis, as required.
• Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures; take appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
• Properly chart medical care.
• Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include administering basic emergency medical aid, physically removing people away from dangerous situations, and securing and evacuating people from confined areas.
• Requires long periods of waking and standing.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• Degree in nursing, current, valid nursing RN license in the state of Texas or a compact state.
• Must possess current CPR certification.
• Must work within Texas state board of nursing scope of practice.
• Must successfully complete required preservice training.
• Valid driver’s license in the state of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
