UMMC Midtown Campus, one of two campuses of the University of Maryland Medical Center, has a long history of working to keep the community healthy and is a trusted teaching hospital for medical and surgical care in Baltimore City. The campus is a 180‑bed, community teaching hospital focused on helping patients manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary conditions, and infectious diseases.

Ideal Candidate

• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligibility to practice under Compact state agreements, is required.
• BSN preferred. Up‑to‑date status on all mandatory training and classes.
• One year minimum nursing experience with solid knowledge and clinical skills.

The CNII (CN‑II) is a member of the health care team and renders nursing care to all patients within the assigned unit or area, assuring that the nursing process is followed from admission through discharge. The CN‑II collaborates with other members of the health team, delegates to support staff, and directs care to meet patient needs. The CN‑II must exercise good judgment, promote teamwork with physicians and personnel from other units, and stay current with standards of practice through ongoing education relevant to nursing, such as the Nurse Practice Act. The RN’s actions and attitudes will support the hospital’s mission and core values, including the ability to function effectively as a charge nurse and precept new staff members.

The CN‑II must be able to demonstrate, document, and teach core measures such as restraints, falls, wound care, pain management, customer service, National Patient Safety Goals, critical values, patient teaching, and suicide assessment. The candidate should competently delegate and supervise personnel, integrating technical competencies with a bi‑psychosocial approach to patient care and employing critical thinking skills to solve problems and care for groups of patients. The CN‑II complies with the Maryland Practice Act, understands patient safety goals, nursing quality performance measures, patient education, and best practices for client care. The CN‑II collaborates with other disciplines, identifies unresolved issues for supervisory staff, participates in service‑wide committees, task forces, or planning committees, and models excellent customer service for clients.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

• Understand and follow policies and protocols and help others use these resources effectively, addressing patient needs in relation to quality measures, National Patient Safety Goals, and patient education.
• Function as charge nurse and/or preceptor, coordinating with the supervisor to resolve unit‑level issues.
• Perform assessments and reassessments as appropriate for each patient, collecting data from all sources to formulate a nursing diagnosis.
• Develop an individualized Plan of Care, based on the patient’s assessment, with realistic and measurable goals, and document thoroughly.
• Coordinate and direct available resources and personnel in implementing the Plan of Care.
• Administer medications and carry out nursing interventions as ordered by the physician, following the Plan of Care.
• Evaluate the patient’s response to treatments or interventions through reassessment, revising the Plan of Care as necessary.
• Document assessments, reassessments, treatment interventions, and any changes to the Plan of Care accurately and on time, communicating changes to the team.
• Assess patient teaching needs and plan patient education accordingly; complete teaching, assess understanding, and document.
• Communicate and collaborate effectively with the health care team to ensure continuity and coordination of care and report changes in patient condition.
• Facilitate safe and timely patient throughput, including admission, transfer, discharge, diagnostic, and therapeutic processes.
• Comply with hospital policies, practices, and professional behavior standards.
• Follow Joint Commission (TJC) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) standards as part of routine practice.
• Assist with the annual PCT core competency program.
• Attend and actively participate in unit staff meetings and shared governance activities, including committees or task forces.
• Support shared governance and demonstrate compliance with UMMC Midtown Campus mission, vision, values, philosophy, goals, objectives, and policies.
• Meet continuing education and participation requirements of the clinical ladder.

Education and Experience

• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Maryland or eligibility under Compact agreements; BSN preferred. Up‑to‑date status on all mandatory training and classes.
• One‑year nursing experience; solid knowledge and clinical skills.
• Current CPR certification required.
• Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education every two years.
• Membership in a professional organization.
• Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.
• ACLS provider certification completed within one year of employment for ICU/IMC, PACU, Interventional Radiology, GI Lab, and ED.
• PALS certification completed within one year of employment for PACU and Emergency Department.
