Responsibilities

• Practices family centered nursing according to policies and the Nurse Practice Act; serves as charge nurse when assigned; supervises, plans, evaluates, and coordinates patient care provided by other licensed and non-licensed staff.
• Provides CPR according to American Heart Association standards and performs basic life support and management of arrest situations.
• Enforces all compliance requirements, policies, and confidentiality, and serves as preceptor for new employees and nursing students.
• Is available in hospital within 30 minutes of call and can serve as charge nurse or board runner as needed.
• Utilizes the nursing process to assess the patient, plan individual care, identify expected outcomes, implement and evaluate nursing interventions, and provide patient and family education.
• Performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures including medication administration (controlled substances, IVs, venipuncture, arterial blood sampling), blood and blood product administration, and basic EKG interpretation.
• Uses proper body mechanics when moving, positioning, and transferring patients; manages equipment safely; maintains proficiency in airway management, hemodynamic monitoring, and mechanical ventilation.
• Maintains accurate and complete records using the Hospital Information System, ensuring documentation of ADP completion, charting, discharge forms, pain assessment tools, MAR, and reconciliation of Omnicell discrepancies.
• Adheres to infection control and safety standards, uses lead aprons during radiation procedures, and follows radiological guidelines and precautions.
• Records and submits charges related to supplies, time in the room, and procedures performed.
• Facilitates timeliness of procedures and schedules, maintaining procedure rooms and crash cart/defibrillator checks.
• Assists with development of policies and procedures, staff development programs, mandatory staff meetings, education, and research projects.
• Participates in mock codes, maintains patient logs, and gathers data for performance improvement and quality assurance.
• Assists in orienting new staff and demonstrates resources for the team.
• Works regular schedule and complies with overtime as required.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, licensure with the state of Alabama as a Registered Nurse, and ACLS certification within 6 months of employment.
