Job summary

Phillips Exeter Academy is seeking a Staff Nurse to join its on‑campus Health Center. The role provides clinical care to students, individual nursing assessments, immunizations, blood draws, and referrals to NP/PA/MD with a team‑based approach and strict confidentiality.

Shifts are 12‑hour nights, three per week, with every other weekend; the health center operates year‑round, including summer sessions. The compensation is $43.00–$47.00 per hour, based on education and experience.

Qualifications

  • RN with NH (or compact) nursing license required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certified.
  • 3–5 years’ experience working with adolescents in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience in an educational setting preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive physical assessments independently.
  • Uses critical thinking to evaluate the needs of each student, referring to NP/PA/MD as needed.
  • Draws blood, calls in prescriptions, dispenses medications, administers immunizations, and performs other procedures as ordered.
  • Admits students to Health Center for overnight observation and treatment.
  • Maintains confidentiality and thorough documentation to ensure continuity of care.

Compensation

$43.00 -$47.00/hr. Hourly compensation forthis position is based on relevant education and experience andwill be set within the listed range.

Schedule

3 12 hour shifts per week (7p-7a), every otherweekend. The health center is open 24/7 during the Academic Yearand 5 weeks during the summer when school is in session. Schedulemay vary according to departmental and Academy needs.

Position Purpose

The Staff Nurse uses a team approach to healthcare, applyingnursing processes, medical procedure and testing, criticalthinking, and referral. Effectively interacts with students,parents, physicians and other health care providers with the aim ofassisting students to assume responsibility for their own healthand wellness.

Job Responsibilities
Health and Well-Being Promotion
  • Performs comprehensive physical assessments independent ofother nursing colleagues.
  • Uses critical thinking in evaluating the needs of each student,making appropriate referrals as needed to NP/PA/MD, counselors,athletic trainers, nutritionist, and/or outside MDs.
  • Ensures that physicians and outside providers are providedcomprehensive diagnostic information.
Personal Nursing Care
  • Independently initiates and implements nursing care plan.
  • Works as part of a team to provide care for crisisintervention, acute illness, injury, and emotional concerns.
  • Admits students to Health Center for overnight observation andtreatment.
  • Draws blood, calls in prescriptions, dispenses medications,administers immunizations, and performs other medical proceduresand tests as deemed necessary and ordered by NP/PA/MD.
  • Observes on a one-on-one basis students who pose safetyconcerns.
General Health Services Support
  • Develops relationships of trust built on respect, ethics,professionalism and effective communications.
  • Uses effective teaching and counseling skills.
  • Uses concise, thorough documentation to promote continuity ofcare and keep health records complete, accurate, and up todate.
  • Effectively communicates with parents, faculty, health servicesteam, and outside providers while maintaining appropriateconfidentiality.
  • Follows LHWC protocol and procedures, adheres to NH Board ofNursing scope of practice, and maintains competencies.
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methodsand procedures; anatomy and physiology applicable to assignedduties; and medical supplies and equipment used in nursingpractice.

Position Requirements
Education/Licensing
  • RN with valid NH (or compact) nursing license required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified.
Experience
  • 3 - 5 years’ previous experience working with adolescents in ahealthcare setting.
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational settingpreferred.
  • Experience in an institutional or campus setting

  • Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work andwill require the ability to remain standing for extended periods oftime, go up and down flights of steps, lift and push heavy objectsas well as stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 50lbs withoutassistance.
  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periodsof time.
