As an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient-centered care. The RN practices professional nursing within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. The role of the RN involves leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and ensuring quality outcomes. YNHHS nurses practice within our professional practice model, "Achieving outcomes through Autonomy and Accountability." We value Nursing Professional Governance and utilize evidence and data to support our practice, always centered on the patient and family. The RN provides care that:

  • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family, incorporating cultural and diversity considerations.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Respects the patient's values, preferences, expressed needs, and healthcare knowledge in holistic care planning and evaluation.
Responsibilities
  1. Standards of Practice: Guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015), the RN performs assessments, diagnoses, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN collects pertinent data, analyzes it, sets expected outcomes, develops and modifies care plans, implements plans, coordinates care, promotes health and safety, and evaluates progress.
  2. Standards of Professional Performance: The RN demonstrates competence in ethics, cultural practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN practices ethically, respects diversity, communicates effectively, collaborates, leads, seeks knowledge, integrates evidence, contributes to quality, evaluates practice, utilizes resources responsibly, and practices safely.
Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred. Current BCLS certification required within one month of hire.

Experience: All RNs encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical program. Minimum 9 months acute care experience required (excluding orientation).
Licensure: Valid RN license in Connecticut. Certification in specialty areas encouraged.

Additional Skills & Physical Demands

Requires prolonged standing, walking, and sensory use; may involve exposure to infectious diseases and emotional stress. Must be able to assist with patient handling up to 300 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Critical care or pediatrics experience preferred. BLS required; PALS and ACLS preferred.
