JOB SUMMARY

To act as patient advocate, providing continuity of care designed to meet individual patient needs through collaboration with other members of the health care team. Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals. The Circulating Nurse will assess the perioperative needs of individual patients including but not limited to adult, pediatric, neonatal and adolescent patients.

Reports To: OR Manager

Classification: Non-Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS

Licensure as a Registered Nurse. Current PALS and ACLS certification

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE

Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Pre-procedure assessment includes:
  • Assess level of consciousness and skin integrity.
  • Identify patient and introduce self.
  • Determine a plan of care based on individual needs.
  • Provide necessary patient teaching.
  1. Check chart, confirm consent, review history and physical, laboratory results, allergies, and operative site.
  2. Validate correct patient positioning and ensure safe alignment and exposure of surgical site.
  3. Assist in bringing patient to the operating room and positioning safely.
  4. Make decisions regarding sterilization of equipment and instrumentation.
  5. Prepare room, equipment, and supplies for the procedure, ensuring availability.
  6. Dispose of biohazardous waste per policy.
  7. Perform housekeeping duties as per OR policies.
  8. Perform laboratory testing as required, including specimen handling and reporting results.
  9. Maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital information.
  10. Create a safe environment for surgery.
  11. Handle instrument processing from decontamination to storage.
  12. Follow policies on sterilization, equipment safety, and cost-effective care.
  13. Implement aseptic techniques and perform sponge, instrument, and needle counts.
  14. Support hospital staff and maintain a cooperative attitude.
  15. Ensure a safe work environment following OSHA and infection control standards.
  16. Use surgeon preference cards for supplies and instruments.
  17. Open sterile packs properly and maintain sterile technique during gowning and gloving.
  18. Handle specimens according to policy, ensuring chain of custody.
  19. Restock supplies and maintain PAR levels.
  20. Adhere to attendance, punctuality, and break policies.
  21. Complete tasks efficiently and independently, adjusting as needed.
  22. Participate in department meetings and follow safety policies.
  23. Assist anesthesia providers and document procedures accurately.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical requirements include frequent sitting, talking, listening, handling objects, reaching, and vision tasks. Must be able to lift over 20 pounds, push/pull over 25 pounds, and stand or walk for at least five hours daily.
