Position Summary

Administers patient care in an area in a hospital or inpatient setting where patients have an advanced illness or injury that routinely requires timely, intense, and complex care to stabilize and support the patient’s medical condition. These areas require a lower caregiver-to-patient ratio and highly trained team members with advanced skills.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates critical knowledge, skills, and judgment to care for patients requiring complex assessment and therapies, high-intensity interventions, and high-level continuous nursing vigilance.
  • Utilizes information and assessment data to anticipate and respond with confidence and adapt to rapidly changing patient conditions.
  • Identifies and prioritizes information to take immediate and decisive evidence-based, patient-focused action.
  • Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, and interprets and records electronic displays (e.g., intracranial pressures, central venous pressures, pulmonary artery pressures, cardiac rhythms, ventilators, oxygen delivery devices).
  • Responds to life-saving situations based on nursing standards and protocol.
  • Observes, monitors, and assesses patient condition; recognizes and interprets serious situations and calls for physician or takes preplanned emergency measures when a physician is not immediately available.
  • Assesses patient needs and develops/revises an individualized plan of care; evaluates progress toward outcomes.
  • Respects diversity and builds respectful relationships with all team members and patients/families.
  • Functions as a patient and family advocate.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills appropriate to the age of patients served on the unit/department.
  • Acts as a preceptor, charge nurse, unit educator, and/or nurse clinician.
  • Communicates and collaborates with medical staff and interdisciplinary team to plan and manage the unit/department.
  • Serves as a role model and supports hospital and nursing department goals and strategies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles; assesses patient data and interprets information to identify age-specific needs.
  • Coordinates care and delegates tasks to other team members as appropriate.
  • Documents patient care accurately and in a timely manner, meeting regulatory standards (including assessment, education, medication administration, treatments, and safety).
  • Demonstrates competency in nursing skills and unit equipment.
  • Prioritizes patient care per Evidence-Based Practice Standards of Care.
  • Communicates patient condition and unit concerns to the health care team.
  • Demonstrates caring practices and a compassionate, therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  • Recognizes and respects legal issues and patients’ rights.
  • Collaborates with education and nursing leadership to support new staff and students.
  • Maintains regular, punctual attendance consistent with hospital policies and applicable laws.

Specialized ECMO responsibilities

  • For trained Advanced Care RNs: function as ECMO/ECMO Specialist, providing staffing for Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) services.
  • Work under the direction of unit leadership, intensivists, perfusion services, and bedside staff to ensure adequate perfusion and stability for ECMO patients.
  • Operate ECMO equipment, monitor the circuit, and administer blood products/medications through the ECMO circuit as ordered.
  • Maintain continuous ECLS coverage and participate in mandatory quarterly simulations.

Other Related Functions

  • Contribute to knowledge and quality improvement; participate in unit/organization committees and peer reviews.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area; attend in-services and meetings.
  • Partner with nursing leadership for professional development needs.
  • Take responsibility for personal professional development and continuing education.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned; maintain equipment and supplies for ECMO/perfusion services as needed.
  • Provide critical nursing resource support to CVICU or other areas as directed when not providing ECLS services.
Qualifications

Education/Training

  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing.
  • Meets all mandatory, developmental, and performance competency requirements for the organization and unit/department.

Licensure/Certification

  • Current Alabama RN license.
  • Current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.
  • ACLS, NRP, PALS, TNCC are required for certain areas; NRP required for NICU.

Experience

  • 1 year experience required unless approved by AVP level or above.
