Job summary

McLaren Health Care in Michigan is seeking a Stress-Testing Nurse to deliver nursing care within the unit’s scope, following hospital policies and standards of care. This role supports the cardiac testing program and ensures patient safety throughout the procedure.

You will perform focused pre-test assessments, establish IV access, administer stress agents, monitor patients, and collaborate with cardiology teams to ensure safe, efficient testing and clear post-test instructions.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse license.
• ACLS required within six months of hire for Critical Care, Emergency, Endoscopy, Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardiac Rehab, ICU and Telemetry Floats.
• NRP required for Labor and Delivery; PALS within one year for Emergency Department.
• PALS and TNCC within one year for Emergency Department.

Responsibilities

• Performs focused pre-test assessment: vitals, symptoms, cardiac history, medications and contraindications.
• Starts and manages IV lines for pharmacologic stress agents and emergency medications.
• Safely administers stress agents and monitors for adverse reactions.
• Monitors ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and patient symptoms continuously.
• Recognizes arrhythmias and initiates ACLS protocols when needed.
• Explains procedures, expectations and post-test instructions to patients.
• Documents vitals, symptoms and interventions in real time.
• Collaborates with cardiologists, APPs and technologists to ensure safe and accurate testing.

Responsible for the delivery of nursing care within the assigned unit scope of practice following hospital policies and procedures, nursing process guidelines, standards of care, and standards of practice.

Core responsibilities of a stress-testing nurse

• Patient assessment — Performs a focused pre‑test assessment: vitals, symptoms, cardiac history, medications, and contraindications. Ensures the patient is clinically appropriate for testing.
• IV access — Starts and manages IV lines for pharmacologic stress agents (e.g., Lexiscan, Dobutamine) and emergency medications.
• Medication administration — Safely administers stress agents and monitors for adverse reactions.
• Continuous monitoring — Monitors ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and patient symptoms throughout the test.
• Emergency readiness — Recognizes arrhythmias, ischemic changes, hypotension, or distress. Initiates ACLS protocols if needed.
• Patient education — Explains the procedure, expectations, and post‑test instructions.
• Documentation — Documents vitals, symptoms, medications, and any interventions in real time.
• Collaboration with providers — Works closely with cardiologists, APPs, and technologists to ensure safe and accurate testing.

Required:

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Experience in a specialty area will be considered. Experience specific to the unit/position may be required to maintain overall competency level of unit, as required by regulatory agency.
• Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse license.
• Within six months of hire into department, ACLS required for RNs in Critical Care, Emergency, Endoscopy, Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardiac Rehab, Intensive Care Unit and Step-Down, Telemetry Floats. NRP required for RNs in Labor and Delivery; and PALS required for RNs in Pediatrics; PALS and TNCC within one year for the Emergency Department.

Preferred:

• One year of professional nursing experience.
• ACLS preferred in other units.
