Qualifications

  • English literacy sufficient to perform job duties safely and effectively.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
  • Two years of behavioral health/chemical dependency clinical care and recovery services experience preferred.
  • Preferred training in Crisis Intervention, de-escalation strategies, and suicide risk assessment.
  • Certification in PMH-BC is preferred; BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care including assessment, documentation, care planning, counseling, crisis intervention, case management, and medication management.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to support stabilization, recovery, and safe discharge planning.
  • Engage in crisis intervention and de-escalation during psychiatric emergencies.

Job description


Incumbent provides optimal care utilizing knowledge and skills within the context of evidence based psychiatric nursing practice and the theory of human caring. They specialize in caring for patients with mental health crises, substance use disorder, and other behavioral health conditions. Incumbent ensures safety, administers treatments and medications as ordered, monitors clinical status, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to support stabilization, recovery, and safe discharge planning. Incumbent requires strong assessment skills, crisis de-escalation competence, and adherence to clinical, regulatory, and documentation standards.

Nature and Scope:

The Behavioral Health Registered Nurse must be able to work interdependently within a team framework and demonstrate competency with mental health/chemical dependency assessment, interventions, and referral. The incumbent must provide optimal care through assessment, planning and evaluation of adult and geriatric patients and their families. The incumbent plays a crucial role in crisis intervention, patient education, and discharge planning. Crisis intervention includes training to provide optimal care for patients experiencing psychiatric emergencies including suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, and aggressive behaviors. The incumbent must be competent in the use of de-escalation techniques and providing immediate support using evidence-based practice to stabilize patients. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. The incumbent must be able to initiate contact with internal and external resources on behalf of the client. Working knowledge of the 12-step recovery process, and the ability to empower clients to use their own internal resources as well as to access relevant external services is essential. This person must demonstrate the ability to collaborate with patients and their families and various caregivers in different settings. This person must have thorough knowledge of community resources and be capable of making appropriate referrals. Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Name Description

Education: Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform job duties safely and effectively. Graduation from an accredited nursing program.

Experience: Two years of experience in applying behavioral health / chemical dependency clinical care and recovery services to psychiatric and/or chemical dependency setting preferred (inpatient psych, ED psych liaison, crisis services, or community mental health). 12-step expertise preferred. Preferred training or experience in:Crisis Intervention model and de-escalation strategiesTrauma informed caresubstance use and withdrawal related assessmentsuicide risk assessment tools and protocolsemergency room nursing

License(s): Ability to obtain and maintain state of Nevada Registered Nurse license.

Certification(s): Current BLS certification by The American Heart Association standards required at time of hire. Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification (PMH-BC) preferred.

Computer / Typing: Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
