Job summary

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Washington State RN license or NLC MSL with WA primary residence updated within 60 days of hire.
  • BLS certification required every two years.
  • Oncology experience is a plus; training provided.
  • Strong critical thinking and clinical judgment required.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Color vision required by color screening.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Assesses physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs and evaluates patients’ adaptation to health changes
  • Develops a plan of care based on patients’ disease, symptoms, and response to treatment
  • Educates patients, families, and caregivers on disease processes, treatment, side effects and symptom management
  • Coordinates with inter-disciplinary team to ensure continuity of care
  • Refers patients, families and caregivers as appropriate to other clinical resources/professionals such as social work, home health care, clinical nutrition, etc.
  • Implements, evaluates and modifies plan of care
  • Integrates research and evidence based knowledge into clinical practice
  • Uses critical thinking and the nursing process to assess and meet the needs of patients by providing care coordination throughout the cancer continuum
  • Develop, implement and evaluate patient’s plan of care based on patients’ disease, symptoms, and response to treatment
  • Assesses educational needs of patients, families, and caregivers taking into consideration barriers to care (e.g., literacy, language, cultural influences, comorbidities)
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers on disease processes, treatment, side effects and symptom management
  • Assesses patient needs and matching unmet needs with appropriate services and referrals and support services, such as dietitians, providers, social work, and financial services
  • Integrates research and evidence-based knowledge into clinical practice
  • Adheres to unit policies and procedures compliant with regulatory requirements documentation; follows FDA, FACT, CAP and other regulatory requirements and guidance.
  • Assesses patient and donor medical history and clinical condition for procedural concerns, risks and contraindications to apheresis
  • Performs donor screenings and reviews donor health history questionnaires, justifications and other related documentation related to apheresis procedures
  • Monitors patient/donor response and uses real-time visual assessment of color and blood layer separation to guide appropriate technical and medication adjustments, ensuring accurate collection and patient safety Communicates with medical and Apheresis provider teams to address potential and immediate clinical concerns
  • Processes apheresis products, including labeling and delivery
  • Accepts rotating on-call assignment for evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work in different clinical care locations (involves the ability to push/pull >40-pound wheeled machines)
  • Assist in policy and procedure development, review, revision and implementation.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Must have current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license or current NLC multistate license (MSL); and MSL primary state of residence must be updated to WA within 60 days of hire. This requirement may be waived under specific circumstances, subject to approval.
  • Applicants that do not have previous oncology experience will be provided additional training and support
  • Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years
  • Additional certification may be required dependent upon department.
  • Critical thinking; the ability to practice the cognitive skills of analyzing, applying standards, discriminating, information seeking, logical reasoning, predicting, and transforming knowledge
  • Ability to develop clinical judgment.
  • Time Management skills; the ability to organize and manage time and tasks independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively by looking and listening for cues, asking open-ended questions, exploring cues, using pauses, screening responses, and clarifying response.
  • Ability to effectively listen by using reflecting, acknowledging, summarizing, empathizing, and paraphrasing skill.
  • Ability to effectively provide information by checking what information the person knows already, giving small amounts of information at a time, using clear terms and avoiding jargon, avoiding detail unless it is requested, checking for understanding, and pausing and waiting for a response.
  • Builds therapeutic and trusting relationships with patients, families, and caregivers through effective communication and listening skills
  • Must be able to differentiate between colors and pass a standardized color vision screen test to perform this role.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Two years of nursing experience preferred.
Benefits

The hourly pay range for this position is from $54.78 to $101.42, which includes the per diem differential, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position. This position may be eligible for relocation assistance. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees access to a retirement savings plan, an employee assistance program, and paid sick leave (1 hour for every 30 hours worked).
