Job summary

WVU is implementing the CAPE program to advance inpatient nurses through levels by meeting experience, degree, and certification requirements. Eligible nurses demonstrate leadership as a charge nurse and/or precepting students, while actively engaging in quality improvement and governance activities.

Nurses with a BSN or higher or ADN/diploma with substantial experience may qualify for progression; multiple levels may require a specialty certification.

Qualifications

• Current nursing license and eligibility for CAPE levels.
• Experience as a charge nurse and/or precepting new staff or nursing students.
• Active involvement in quality improvement (QI) and shared governance at unit or organizational level.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate leadership through CAPE ladder advancement across levels 1–6.
• Mentor and supervise nursing staff and students as assigned.
• Engage in QI initiatives and contribute to governance processes at unit and organizational levels.

They must also meet the required years of nursing experience, degree, and certification to apply for the next level.
