Summary: Under general direction, incumbent(s) provides health care to students and staff; dispenses medication; implements specialized health care protocols; responds to medical emergencies; treats accidents and illnesses; develops individualized health care plans for students and staff; trains staff about health concerns, including those specifically related to medically fragile students; serves as a member of a management team to address students' academic, social, psychological, and medical needs; supervises the school’s health care team; performs health screenings; maintains health records; ensures immunizations are current; provides referral information to families; provides classes and information to students and families to promote wellness; and networks with community agencies and other medical professionals.

Essential Functions
  • Organizes and maintains health office and health records, orders and keeps supplies, and reviews immunization records for compliance.
  • Administers daily medications and treatments following District procedures and physician orders, ensuring proper storage in locked cabinets.
  • Provides specialized health care for accidents and illnesses of students and personnel, assessing level of care needed and completing accident reports.
  • Tracks daily attendance for each class, records absences, notifies parents, and advises the principal.
  • Administers medication and implements specialized protocols (e.g., oxygen, ventilator therapies, tracheotomy suctioning, ostomy care, catheterization, IV feeding, gastric tube feeding, SVN treatments, blood sugar monitoring) as ordered, developing detailed care plans for complex cases.
  • Notifies, advises, and updates parents about health care issues and medical problems.
  • Coordinates services for medically fragile students within and outside the school, maintaining communication with physicians, health agencies, and social services.
  • Consults with principal on emergency situations, suspected abuse, contagious diseases, and other medically sensitive issues.
  • Participates in management team meetings, provides student health information that may affect performance, and recommends interventions, including involvement in IEP meetings.
  • Provides training to students and staff on health issues such as asthma, diabetes, hygiene, dental care, feeding, hygiene procedures for fragile students, and care of technology devices.
  • Organizes and performs screening procedures for hearing, vision, height, weight, blood pressure, and lice.
  • Develops and implements emergency protocols for technology‑dependent students and trains staff in procedures.
  • Stays current on health issues and regulatory changes.
  • Performs other related duties and attends meetings coordinated by the Health Services Coordinator.
Required Qualifications
  • Current registered nurse license
  • Two years of nursing experience
  • Current CPR Certificate
  • Valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Three years of school nursing experience
  • School Nurse Certification
  • Hearing screening training certificate
Knowledge and Skills Required

Skills include applying health and safety laws, knowledge of child development and specialized health concerns, pediatric health issues, community referral services, screening techniques, assessment and treatment of injuries and illnesses, medication administration, appropriate transfer and positioning, presentation of educational materials, paperwork management, and communication.

Physical Requirements

The employee regularly stands, walks, uses hands, reaches, talks, hears, sometimes stoops, kneels, crouches, climbs; may lift up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally; requires close and distance vision, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Working Conditions
