ResponsibilitiesJob SummaryThe RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standards for Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics. The RN applies professional nursing principles and practices in caring for patients, including recording medical histories, performing diagnostic tests, operating medical equipment, administering treatments and medications, and supporting patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN develops or contributes to care plans, administers medications safely, manages IV lines, educates patients and families, and collaborates with healthcare team members. The RN also supports clinical knowledge advancement, precepts new staff and students, and strives to improve patient experience and clinical outcomes.
All RN staff responsible for stroke patients must have knowledge of:
• Stroke symptoms and warning signs
• Protocols for stroke management
• NIHSS
• Stroke alert procedures
• Stroke quality indicators
• Educational materials and community resources
• Educational requirements
• Stroke Center resources
Essential Functions- Collect health data systematically, prioritize based on patient needs, and involve families. Develop and revise individualized, evidence-based, family-centered care plans.
- Set expected outcomes tailored to patient conditions and develop care plans that ensure continuity and cultural relevance.
- Implement interventions, including treatments, medications, emergency measures, and family-centered care, utilizing policies and protocols.
- Evaluate patient progress, document care and observations, and ensure quality and effectiveness of care plans to promote high-quality healthcare outcomes.
- Self-evaluate nursing practice against standards and regulations, maintaining current knowledge and quality of practice.
- Apply ethical principles and enhance cultural competence.
- Contribute to professional development of peers and participate in mentoring programs.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and patients’ families in care delivery.
- Develop and evaluate evidence-based standards of care, participate in research, and support practice improvements.
- Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost-efficiency in patient care using available resources.
Education- Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) preferred.
- All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months or have 10 years of RN experience.
- All staff responsible for stroke patients must complete specific stroke education prior to start.
Experience- More than 10 months in med-surg or acute specialty setting — Required.
- 1-year RN experience for float positions — Required.
Licenses and Certifications- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification — Required.
- RN licensure in Arizona or a compact state — Required.
- National certification for specific patient populations — Preferred.
