Summary

SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides essential primary health care to financially disadvantaged youth (ages 16–24) within a Job Corps center setting. The role focuses on helping students become responsible, productive citizens by managing their physical and emotional health needs, with a goal of maintaining high student satisfaction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Clinical Care: Administers primary care for illnesses, injuries, and dental or mental health problems.
  • Sick Call: Holds regularly scheduled sick-call to provide assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of minor illnesses in accordance with authorized physician standing orders.
  • Student Assessments: Completes cursory health evaluations (health history, vitals, and lab testing) for new students within their first 48 hours on center.
  • Emergency & Chronic Care: Provides primary care for trauma and emergency cases, while also managing chronic health problems.
  • Case Management: Collaborates with the Center Mental Health Counselor (CMHC) and medical providers to monitor and manage students on psychotropic or chronic medications.
  • Referrals: Makes recommendations for referrals to private physicians, dentists, and community resources based on student needs and coordinates necessary follow-up care.
  • Compliance & Audits: Prepares the wellness center for Program Compliance Assessments (PCA) and conducts internal record and chart audits.
  • Administration: Maintains medical records and accident forms while ensuring strict adherence to HIPAA and the Privacy Act.
  • Supply Management: Requisitions, stores, and safeguards medical supplies and drugs, including controlled substances.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to work both independently and as an integrated member of a healthcare team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to counsel, educate, and motivate students to succeed in their vocational and academic performance.
  • Proficiency in providing services in a positive manner to facilitate student participation in treatment plans.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 to 2 years of professional nursing experience in clinical care, ambulatory care, public health, or emergency triage.
  • Licensure & Certifications: Current, active Montana State Registered Nurse (RN) License or a multistate compact RN license in good standing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred or required depending on center emergency protocols.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

The nurse assists the Health and Wellness Director (HWD) with internal program assessments and manages the daily operations of the dispensary and clinical equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The position is located in a health clinic at a Job Corps center, which are often situated in rural areas some distance from main roads.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The nurse must be capable of providing primary care for trauma cases and may be required to drive students in Government vehicles.

ROLE AND LOCATION SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
  • Prevention Programs: Participates in the Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP) and the Healthy Eating Active Lifestyles (HEALs) committee.
  • Biochemical Testing: Participates in all aspects of the biochemical testing program to ensure its integrity.
  • Staff Training: Assists with or arranges for 5 hours of staff training on adolescent growth and development annually.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
  • Standard Schedule: Typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, though evenings and weekends may be required by mutual agreement.
  • Structure: Includes two 15-minute breaks and a non-paid 30-minute lunch for an eight-hour day.
  • Variability: Required hours may vary based on the center’s student population, which ranges from 100 to over 300 students.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Travel outside of the daily commute is generally not expected.

CLEARANCE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • License: Must have an active, unrestricted Registered Nurse license to practice in the state where services are provided.
  • Background: Must agree to a criminal background check and drug testing as a prerequisite for contract performance.
