Job description

Position Summary:

The RN will provide comprehensive preventative and therapeutic nursing care in an ambulatory health care setting. All duties and responsibilities will be performed in accordance with the Nursing Board standards of care.

Specific Duties And Responsibilities:
  • Promotes and assists in restoring the patients’ health by completing the nursing process, including triage, appropriate medical testing and test interpretation, case management, consulting with providers, and related services and activities.
  • Triages patients in person or on phone to help direct them to the appropriate medical care and advice as needed.
  • Acts as a resource to staff and providers to perform tasks and medical care that should be performed by a RN.
  • Educates and reviews instructions for patients on use of medical equipment for self‑care or monitoring at home. Including insulin or other self‑injections, blood glucose, medications, blood pressure monitoring, dressings.
  • Perform IV insertion/monitoring to include fluid rehydration and/or medication administration as directed by the medical provider.
  • Perform phlebotomy as directed by the medical provider.
  • Ensures that health maintenance needs are reviewed with provider and demonstrates ability to monitor and provide appropriate patient care per the position competency checklist.
  • Engages appropriately with age‑specific screening, GPRA indicators, Diabetes Standards of Care (IHS, ADA). Carries out health maintenance procedures as allowed by standardized procedures.
  • Perform electrocardiograms (EKG) as directed by the provider.
  • Administers medications as ordered by the provider, including urgent and emergent medications such as BLS drugs and nebulized medications; verifies drug, dosage, allergy status prior to administration. Documents all medications dispensed.
  • Ensures that all medical equipment including AED, defibrillator, emergency cart, equipment, oxygen, medications and IV supplies are maintained in working order and supplies are current per monthly emergency checklist ready for use in emergencies as needed.
  • Ensures lab specimens (those sent to the outside lab) are properly processed including paperwork.
  • Assists providers with paperwork and collection of records needed to ensure quality patient visits.
  • Assists with inventory and checks expiration dates for supplies and medications as outlined in Nursing Responsibilities and disposes of expired items via lab or Clinic Administrator.
  • Adheres to Blood‑borne Pathogen Control Plan and disposes of sharps per protocol.
  • Assists with reviewing and developing protocols for clinic operations as requested by Clinic Administrator.
  • Assists in the proper use and maintenance of technical medical equipment and patient examination rooms.
  • Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team members and carries out duties as requested.
  • Provides physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families; supervises assigned team members.
  • Fulfills crucial functions to ensure quality patient care. May include, care for patients, filling out paperwork, monitoring the waiting room, assisting with referrals and transferring records and reports.
  • Ensures patient records are properly, accurately and timely documented using selected computer hardware and software.
  • Acts as a resource to patients and their families by providing a variety of educational information and support.
  • Safely administers all vaccines as indicated, including COVID‑19. Performs indicated viral testing.
  • Assist physicians and other providers with the follow up of all abnormal test results.
  • In the absence of a pharmacist, assist providers in monitoring patient’s medication compliance; checks refill requests for timeliness of refills; schedules return clinic visit appointment when necessary.
  • Provide Nurse visits for designated conditions per clinical protocol/Provider request.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Preferably with a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Current state license as a Registered Nurse.
  • Two (2) years of ambulatory care nursing experience, nursing or emergency/urgent care experience preferred.
  • Must be proficient in the use of electronic health records systems; preferably RPMS.
  • Must have knowledge of regulations and standards of various regulatory and credentialing groups; i.e., Medi‑Cal, Medicaid and AAAHC Standards.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement measures and methods, such as PDSA cycles and
  • Must be culturally sensitive to Native American traditions, and customs of the community and members served.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to offer care appropriate to a wide population of patients and have knowledge of community resources.
  • Experience working with underserved communities.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and ability to effectively communicate with people of varied professional backgrounds.
  • Possess a current CPR card.
  • Must be willing to submit to and pass a pre‑employment drug screening test.
  • Preference will be given to Native Americans in accordance with P.L. 93‑638.
  • Must possess a current Healthcare Provider CPR card.
