Job Summary
The Dietitian is responsible for the planning and implementation of nutrition care for patients in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, clinical guidelines, and policies. The dietitian collaborates with the Culinary Services Manager to ensure high‑quality nutrition care through oral, enteral, and parenteral therapies.
Leadership
- Complete annual competency testing and maintain a professional growth portfolio to retain registration and licensure/certification.
- Perform clinical duties in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, company policies and procedures, and evidence‑based clinical guidelines.
- Operate within the defined scope of practice.
- Serve on committees as required by company standards, regulations, or by appointment.
- Participate in developing and implementing policies related to nutrition care.
Direct Patient Care
- Conduct initial and re‑assessments on all admitted patients.
- Ensure accurate documentation of assessments, care plans, education, and discharge planning.
- Prescribe nutrition therapy to meet estimated needs and monitor tolerance.
- Provide ongoing reassessments to ensure optimal therapy.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to develop, implement, and monitor nutrition care plans.
- Interview patients, family, legal representatives, or significant others to obtain diet history, food preferences, and other pertinent information.
- Advocate for patients to protect and promote their rights and accommodate individual needs, including cultural and religious preferences.
- Involve patients/families in planning objectives and goals.
- Deliver nutrition education individually and in classes to patients, families, staff, and community.
- Conduct meal rounds to verify patients receive therapy that meets their needs.
- Coordinate with the culinary department to resolve concerns or dissatisfactions with diet or meal service.
Menu Management (if the Culinary Services Manager is not a Registered Dietitian)
- Oversee the menu management process ensuring all aspects are completed per policies and procedures.
- Review and approve all patient menus; approve any substitutions provided to patients.
- Review and approve all nutritional data posted in the café.
- Provide oversight for the transcription of diet orders to ensure accuracy.
- Ensure all patient snack orders are checked against the diet order and distributed timely.
- Train staff on therapeutic diets, menu process, food allergens, or other related topics as needed.
- Be proficient in the operation of the menu management software.
Quality Assurance / Performance Improvement
- Participate in the hospital’s performance improvement program by collecting, aggregating, trending, and acting on data for key department indicators.
- Develop the annual QAPI department plan with mandatory components.
- Participate in quality assurance activities ensuring oral nutrition therapy is safe and accurate from the culinary department.
- Provide monthly reports to the hospital committee as per policy.
- Participate in the survey process; instruct staff on conduct and disclosure; maintain presence during onsite surveys; develop corrective action plans as needed.
- Communicate issues, concerns, and improvement opportunities to the supervisor routinely.

- Complete annual health, safety, and education requirements; maintain professional growth.
- Report to work on time; follow absence notification policies.
- Attend mandatory in‑services and staff meetings.
- Maintain current certification for the position.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Expectations
- Knowledge of therapeutic diets; current clinical nutrition guidelines; federal, state, and city food codes and regulations.
- Basic computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn menu management systems.
- Understanding of growth and development across the lifespan to provide appropriate care for adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
- Fluent English language skills (read, write, speak).
- Good and regular attendance.
- Travel less than 10% of the time.
Salary Range
$28.38 - $42.58 per hour

Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in dietetics or a related nutrition field.
Registration / Licenses / Certification
- Registration from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (www.cdrnet.org).
- Licensure and/or certification from the State Licensing Board for Dietitians, if applicable.
Experience
- Two years of experience in an acute care hospital (preferred).
- Registered dietitians awaiting state licensure/certification may practice under a provisional license if allowed by the state board.
