Job summary

New Horizons Healthcare, Roanoke, VA, is seeking a Dental Hygienist to join our Dental Department on a part-time or full-time basis. You will prepare treatment rooms, support hygiene visits, and help maintain patient records with a focus on compassionate care.

The role requires an Associate degree in Dental Hygiene and Virginia licensure, with bilingual Spanish preferred. We offer a supportive clinic environment and opportunities for professional growth.

New Horizons Healthcare is a federally qualified health center (FQHC) in Roanoke, Virginia that provides comprehensive primary care, behavioral health, dental care, and pharmacy services for almost 10,000 patients annually. Duties
  • Prepares treatment room for patient by adhering to prescribed procedures and protocols.
  • Prepares patient for dental hygiene treatment by welcoming, soothing, seating, and draping patient.
  • Provides information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests.
  • Maintains instrumentation for dental hygiene treatment by sharpening, sterilizing, and reporting needed items to Dental Clinic Administrator.
  • Selects materials and equipment for dental hygiene visit by evaluating patient's oral health.
  • Completes dental prophylaxis by cleaning deposits and stains from teeth and from beneath gum margins.
  • Detects disease by completing oral cancer screening; feeling and visually examining gums; using probes to locate periodontal disease and to assess levels of recession; exposing and developing radiographic studies.
  • Arrests dental decay by applying fluorides, sealants, and other cavity-preventing agents.
  • Helps dentist manage dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification, and checking oxygen supply. Keeps directory of emergency numbers.
  • Instructs patients in proper oral hygiene; care of dental appliances, and prevention of periodontal disease and tooth decay.
  • Documents dental hygiene services by recording vital signs and medical and dental histories; charting in patient records.
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Maintains hygiene ultrasonic unit.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Maintains hygiene supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level.
  • Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dental Director or Dental Practice Administrator.
Qualifications

Associate degree in Dental Hygiene, Licensure by Commonwealth of Virginia. Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ability to work in a positive way with diverse populations of varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Ability to function in a collaborative, interdisciplinary manner with staff and others who work as part of our team. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
