Job summary

Qualifications

Position Summary

The Regional Safety and Fleet Manager is primarily responsible for overseeing safety across the people, locations, and workloads within the Northeast region driving a strong safety culture among drivers and site personnel, monitoring conditions and practices at each location, and ensuring workloads and schedules are structured in ways that support safe operations. This role serves as the primary point of contact for safety incidents, compliance audits, and regional safety performance, working closely with drivers, managers, and regional leadership to minimize risk. As a secondary function, the role also supports basic fleet coordination to help ensure vehicle operations remain safe, compliant and operational.

Key Responsibilities
Safety Oversight — People
  • Review, implement, and monitor regional safety policies and behavioral safety standards for compliance with corporate direction, as well as DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and applicable state regulations.
  • Lead new-hire safety orientation and ongoing driver/employee training and certification programs.
  • Conduct driver ride‑alongs and one‑on‑one coaching to reinforce safe behaviors and identify at‑risk habits before they become incidents.
  • Investigate accidents, near‑misses, and safety incidents; prepare root‑cause analyses and corrective action plans.
  • Partner with HR on driver/employee disciplinary actions related to safety violations.
  • Maintain accurate records for drug/alcohol testing programs, driver qualification files, and safety certifications.
Safety Oversight — Places
  • Conduct regular site inspections and safety audits across all regional facilities, work sites and warehouses.
  • Identify and remediate physical hazards, unsafe conditions, and non‑compliant practices at each location.
  • Serve as regional liaison during DOT audits, insurance inspections, and internal compliance reviews.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of federal, state, and local transportation and workplace safety regulations, and communicate changes to affected sites.
Safety Oversight — Operations
  • Monitor driving behavior, hours‑of‑service, fatigue risk, and workload distribution across the region to ensure schedules support safe operations.
  • Work with dispatch/operations to balance safety requirements against service and delivery demands.
  • Track and report on safety KPIs (accident frequency, CSA scores, violation trends, fatigue‑related incidents) to regional and corporate leadership.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports summarizing regional safety performance for regional leadership.
  • Support the claims management process by supplying documentation and safety data for incident investigations.
  • Act as the go‑to safety resource for managers and associates across the region and conduct regularly scheduled safety meetings and communications.
Fleet Coordination (Minor Responsibility less than 20%)
  • Assist as needed with basic administration and scheduling for the regional fleet with service, accident follow up and vendors.
  • Assist with fleet compliance documentation (e.g., registrations, permits, annual inspections, DVIR) as needed.
Qualifications
Required
  • Willing to travel 60% of the time including some overnight stays
  • 3+ years of experience in fleet safety, transportation compliance, or related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations, hours‑of‑service rules, and vehicle inspection standards.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple sites and competing priorities.
  • Proficiency with fleet management software, telematics/ELD systems, and Microsoft Office (Excel in particular).
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting to leadership and training frontline staff.
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Logistics, Transportation Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Certification such as CDS (Certified Director of Safety), CSP (Certified Safety Professional), or similar.
  • Experience with accident investigation and root‑cause analysis methodologies.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to travel frequently within the assigned region (up to 60%), including overnights as required.
  • Ability to conduct on‑site inspections in outdoor/terminal/yard environments in varying weather conditions.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs (inspection equipment, files, materials).
