Job description

Arnold & Porter is seeking a Regional Business Development & Marketing Manager to lead initiatives across two areas: strengthening the firm’s presence and client relationships in California and driving firmwide growth for the Technology & Media Industry Group, Technology Transactions practice, and Telecommunications practice. This role is located in our San Francisco office.

The Manager partners with California office leadership and attorneys to develop a coordinated market strategy that elevates the firm’s profile, deepens regional relationships, and generates new business opportunities. For the assigned industry group and practices, the Manager works with leaders to identify growth priorities, strengthen competitive positioning, attract new clients, and expand existing relationships.

Across both areas, the Manager translates market intelligence and client insights into actionable plans, connects opportunities across offices and practices, and collaborates with the Marketing Department to execute initiatives and measure results.

Key Responsibilities
Industry Group and Practice Support

  • Analyze market trends, client needs, and competitive positioning to identify business development opportunities.
  • Manage marketing collateral, including website content, brochures, capability statements, presentations, attorney biographies, and experience lists.
  • Partner with attorneys to develop relevant webinar topics and coordinate webinars and client events with the Events Team, including providing on-site support.
  • Identify and support opportunities to raise the firm’s profile through sponsorships, memberships, client presentations, conferences, and speaking engagements.
  • Support the integration of lateral partners and counsel, including developing individual business development plans.
  • Lead strategy and coordinate submissions for Chambers, The Legal 500, and other legal directories and rankings.
  • Collaborate with business development colleagues across practices and industry groups to identify and pursue cross-selling opportunities.
  • Use CRM and experience management systems to identify relationship targets and relevant experience for business development initiatives.
  • Develop and manage budgets for the assigned industry group and practices, track expenditures, and evaluate return on investment.
  • Supervise and mentor junior team members.
  • Support broader Marketing Department priorities, including providing coverage for other practice groups during manager absences.
California Market Support
  • Partner with California office leadership to develop and execute marketing and business development strategies that strengthen the firm’s regional presence and generate business growth.
  • Identify regional media opportunities in collaboration with the Media Relations Team and coordinate award submissions for California attorneys.
  • Support the integration of lateral partners and counsel in California.
  • Develop and manage California business development budgets, track expenditures, and evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives.
  • Maintain regional marketing materials, including internal newsletters, website content, brochures, capability statements, and presentations.
  • Identify and support regional sponsorships, memberships, client presentations, conferences, and speaking opportunities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required; an advanced degree is a plus.
  • Minimum of six years of marketing and business development experience.
  • Prior experience in a law firm, professional services organization, financial services firm, or investment bank preferred.
  • Experience supporting the technology and media industry strongly preferred; knowledge of the California market desired.
  • Strong understanding of law firm and professional services business development; experience with pitches, proposals, and RFP processes preferred.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, presentation, and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems such as DealCloud, experience management tools such as Foundation, and AI-enabled tools preferred.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with partners, firm leadership, colleagues, and clients.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple initiatives, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to define goals and deliver measurable results.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets and evaluating the effectiveness of business development investments.
