Job summary

Canine Companions in Ohio seeks a Regional Breeding Manager to provide veterinary technical care, program management, and coordination for a regional population of breeding dogs and puppies. You will ensure compliance with protocols, monitor health, and support whelping and neonatal care.

This role requires collaboration with veterinary leadership, external clinicians when needed, and travel within the state. Relevant RVT license and strong record-keeping are essential.

About the Position

The Regional Breeding Manager supports Canine Companions’ breeding program by providing consistent, high-quality veterinary technical care, program management and operational coordination for a limited regional population of breeding dogs, pregnancies, litters, and puppies.

Working within the scope of practice of Canine Companions protocols, this position helps coordinate routine breeding-related care, recognizes changes that require escalation, supports whelping and neonatal-care processes, maintains accurate records and supplies, and collaborates with Canine Companions veterinary leadership and local veterinary partners. External clinicians may be used when feasible and appropriate for specialty consultation, diagnostics, urgent care, or referral.

Key Responsibilities

Breeding & Reproductive Support

• Support planned breeding activities, reproductive health monitoring, sample collection, diagnostics and pregnancy-related care.
• Assist with whelping preparation and post-whelp follow-up.
• Conduct home visits for prospective breeder caretakers to ensure environments meet organizational standards.

Whelping & Puppy Care

• Support expected litters before, during and after whelping.
• Monitor dams and puppies for key indicators such as nursing, hydration, weight gain, temperature and behavior.
• Recognize and promptly communicate concerns that require veterinary attention.

Veterinary Technical Care

• Provide veterinary technician-appropriate preventive and routine care under veterinary direction.
• Perform procedures such as specimen collection, medication administration, vaccination-related services and microchip/identification support as permitted by law and organizational protocols.
• Use veterinary equipment including digital X-ray and ultrasound.

Triage & Clinical Coordination

• Conduct initial assessments within the scope of an RVT and identify situations requiring veterinary, urgent or emergency care.
• Collaborate with Canine Companions veterinarians, veterinary leadership and local veterinary partners to support continuity of care.
• Coordinate records, diagnostic information, case updates and follow-up instructions.
• Assist with transportation of dogs and litters to veterinary appointments, breeding appointments or emergency care when needed.

Program Coordination & Communication

• Maintain accurate breeding and medical records, including medications, diagnostics, weights and neonatal observations.
• Coordinate appointments, transportation, supplies and communication with breeders, caretakers, staff, volunteers and veterinary partners.
• Provide clear, protocol-aligned guidance to approved caregivers on routine observations, medication instructions, whelping preparation and neonatal monitoring.
• Maintain appropriate inventory, equipment readiness, biosecurity and infection-control practices.

Qualifications

• Ability to perform skills appropriate for a veterinary technician, including those related to reproduction such as collection and assessment of vaginal cytology, semen collection and reproductive hormone sample collection and handling for testing.
• Familiarity with emergency triage and referral coordination.
• Ability to collaborate with specialty or academic veterinary services, including university-based clinicians.
• Ability to communicate via phone and e-mail. Able to use Microsoft Office, business and database software.
• Up to date with current veterinary technology and equipment.
• Ability to use digital x-ray and ultrasound machines.
• Ability to complete necessary paperwork and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work well will staff; good interpersonal skills and a pleasant manner dealing with volunteers and the public

Nice to Have

Registered Veterinary Technician Licenses strongly preferred

EXPERIENCE

Experience in canine reproduction, theriogenology, whelping, neonatal care, pediatrics, shelter/colony medicine, research animal care, or another setting requiring protocol-driven population health. Experience supporting breeding programs or managing longitudinal veterinary care for a defined animal population preferred. Experience with electronic medical records, inventory systems, and structured clinical documentation required.

Additional Requirements

This position requires regional travel within the state to support breeding dogs, litters, veterinary appointments and clinical coordination.

Because breeding and whelping needs can occur outside standard business hours, this role requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends and holidays and respond to time-sensitive phone calls when needed.

The position is physically active and requires regular walking, standing, bending, stooping and kneeling, as well as the ability to safely lift up to 65 pounds and handle, hold and restrain active dogs weighing up to 110 pounds. Assistance should be sought when lifting dogs or objects over 65 pounds.

Schedule

Full-time. Evenings, weekends and holidays are required as needed.

Compensation

$38.50-$43.25 per hour
