Job summary

City of Denton is hiring a fleet mechanic to repair and maintain gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment within the Fleet Department. The role involves diagnostics, preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and staying current with industry training.

Ideal candidates have ASE certification, a High School diploma, and at least four years of relevant experience. On-site work with potential for overtime; benefits accompany the position.

Summary

Responsible for performing work of mechanic within the Fleet Department to properly repair and maintain gasoline and diesel-powered cars, trucks and other various types of equipment. Performs functions ranging from prioritizing duties to participating in repair and maintenance functions necessary to completing assigned tasks.

DUTIES
  • Perform complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and diagnostic work on refuse collection vehicles and supporting equipment, including, but not limited to, heavy-duty chassis and refuse bodies (automated side-loaders, front-loaders, rear-loaders, and roll-offs).
  • Perform advanced diagnostics and repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, DEF components, high-pressure hydraulic cylinders, pumps, hoses, and air and hydraulic brake systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical circuits, CAN-bus systems, lighting, camera systems, sensors, joystick controls, and accessory circuits.
  • Install and configure operational equipment, including, but not limited to, in-car video, radios, and global positioning system (GPS) units.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and safety inspections on refuse collection vehicles in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Health and Safety Association (OSHA), and
  • manufacturer specifications.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and labor hours in the City’s Fleet Management software.
  • Fabricate minor structural repairs and welding on bins, hoppers, and packer blades, weld joints, and other needs to accommodate new technology and upfitting requirements.
  • Collaborate with solid waste personnel to understand operational concerns and ensure vehicle readiness.
  • Maintain shop tools and equipment; follow all City of Denton and department safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in automotive service excellence (ASE) medium/heavy truck series T2-T8, original equipment manufacturer (OEM), and manufacturer training to stay current with advancements in refuse vehicle systems and technologies.
  • Assist with the preparation of specifications for new refuse collection vehicles and equipment purchases.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and proper disposal of hazardous materials.

Job Requirements
Education, Experience, And Licenses/Certifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent; and,
  • Four (4) years of experience in automotive, heavy-duty vehicle, and/or refuse vehicle repair, or related field; and
  • Must have an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local Government laws, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of refuse vehicle operational requirements, i.e., weight distribution, 360-degree visibility, corrosion mitigation
  • Skill in diagnostic software and scan tool usage, i.e. Allison Diagnostic Optimized Connection (DOC), Cummins Insite, OEM, laptop tools.
  • Skill in problem solving; identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with applicable Microsoft Office 365 products, and other software systems to complete work.
  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to read, understand, and use wiring diagrams, service manuals, schematics, and technical bulletins.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently and/or with a team environment while handling multiple tasks and changing priorities with attention to detail.
  • Ability to motivate, mentor and train through direct and indirect influence.
  • Ability to develop, understand, interpret, and apply rules, policies, and procedures operations.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class B CDL and a good driving record OR must possess a valid Class C driver license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Class B CDL within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, employment history verification, and social security number verification.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must have and maintain a valid ASE certification; and,
  • Must have or obtain and maintain a valid Texas Safety and Emission Inspection Certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must have or obtain and maintain valid ASE T-series within 18 months of employment.
  • Must have or obtain a full set of basic mechanic hand tools and regular equipment based on provided list of required tools.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements
SAFETY
  • Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition; perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment, as appropriate and/or notify leadership immediately of needed repairs.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in the work area and/or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to leadership.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing): Yes/No.
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals;
  • use of hand, power, and mechanic tools and use of motor vehicle; wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Lifting: Lifting no more than 100 pounds and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Environment: Works inside and outside around motor vehicles and equipment with exposure to sun, heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather, noise, dust, no/low light, insects, debris, confined spaces, chemicals, odors, heights, potentially hazardous conditions, uneven ground, and rough terrain; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Travel: Travel to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. Must be able to work after normal business hours, holidays, and weekends, as needed. Must be available to be on stand-by, participate in on-call rotation, and work emergency callouts and perform relief work.
