Job summary

The City of Frederick is seeking a Refuse Collector to support curbside and containerized waste collection. Under general supervision, you will operate the collection vehicle and assist the driver. This essential position may require responding to emergencies outside normal business hours as needed.

Qualified candidates will have 1–3 months of related experience and/or training, and a valid Vehicle Operator's license. A high school diploma or GED is desirable.

Job Summary

The City of Frederick promotes a service-delivery philosophy among City employees to provide responsive service to residents, to be efficient and results-oriented in order to make the City of Frederick a better place to live, work and visit. Under general supervision, the Refuse Collector collects curbside and containerized refuse and places it into the collection vehicle. An employee in this position is considered "essential personnel" and must be able to respond to emergencies outside normal business hours as necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collects curbside and containerized refuse, placing it into collection vehicle.
  • Operates the collection vehicle's hydraulic packer system to compact collected refuse.
  • Assists driver in safely maneuvering vehicle during collection operations.
  • Adheres to safety rules and accident prevention measures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • One (1) to three (3) months of related experience and/or training in performance of heavy manual work is desirable; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
  • Vehicle Operator's license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.
REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):

  • Ability to work in various and changing weather conditions.

OTHER DESIRABLES:
  • One (1) year of experience in the collection of Solid Waste.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITION:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
