Job summary

JBS Prepared Foods is seeking a skilled Maintenance Technician to join our plant in California. The role focuses on maintaining CO₂/refrigeration systems, performing welding and electrical troubleshooting, and ensuring strict safety and documentation practices across a 8–12 hour shift.

Ideal candidates have 3+ years in refrigeration or boiler rooms, familiarity with A/C/D/C controls, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team with weekend/overtime availability.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of refrigeration or boiler room experience.
  • Experience with A/C and D/C control systems and hydraulic/pneumatic systems preferred.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and documentation skills.
  • Willingness to work weekends, overtime, and be on call as needed.
  • Ability to read and write in English.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and complete work orders and preventive maintenance paperwork promptly.
  • Keep a log book of all breakdowns and corrective actions.
  • Perform daily rounds on all equipment, including weekends and holidays.
  • Schedule shutdowns for repairs without disrupting production.
  • Troubleshoot equipment mechanically and electrically.
  • Weld and fabricate refrigeration piping to industry standards.
  • Follow lockout-tagout procedures for all equipment.
  • Be a team player and seek guidance when needed.
  • Receive and follow training on relevant safety topics (LOTO, fall protection, confined space, hot work).
  • Order materials for stock or repairs and maintain clean mechanical rooms.

What You’ll Need:
Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience:

Minimum of 3 years of C02/Refrigerant system or industrial maintenance experience required. Experience working with A/C and D/C control systems and with hydraulic and pneumatic systems preferred.

Skills:

The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities, along with the capability to accurately maintain technical records and documentation. This individual should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team and be comfortable standing and walking for extended periods throughout the shift. Flexibility is essential, including the willingness to work weekends, overtime, and respond to operational needs as required.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities (include but are not limited to):
  • Maintain and complete work orders and preventive maintenance paperwork in a timely manner
  • Maintain a log book of all breakdowns and corrective actions taken
  • Complete daily rounds on all equipment; this includes weekends and holidays, 365 days a year
  • Schedule shutdowns of equipment and machinery for repairs and maintenance without disrupting production
  • Troubleshoot equipment mechanically and electrically for any issues
  • Weld and fabricate refrigeration piping (including copper, stainless steel, and other materials used in CO₂/refrigerant systems) to industry standards
  • Utilize time effectively to best minimize equipment downtime and repairs
  • Be safety-minded and follow lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures for all equipment that is being worked on
  • Be a team player and not afraid to ask for guidance or help when needed
  • Be on call when needed and able to work alone if the situation calls for it
  • Receive and follow training on LOTO, fall protection, confined space, hot work, and any other training deemed necessary to perform the job safely and effectively
  • Order materials and parts as needed for stock or repairs of equipment
  • Maintain clean mechanical rooms at all times with no exceptions
  • Work with several outside vendors and technicians in a professional manner
  • Assist maintenance technicians with mechanical troubleshooting and repairs as needed or as directed by maintenance leadership
  • Support Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Program (RMP) activities as required
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • At least 3 years of experience in a refrigeration or boiler room preferred
  • Proven skills and experience in welding refrigeration pipes (brazing, TIG, Gas torch / Gas or other methods suitable for CO₂/refrigerant systems)
  • Strong working knowledge of industrial maintenance and electrical functions
  • Able to learn and follow directions from management and team leaders
  • Able to follow and implement safety rules
  • Able to read and write in English
  • Proficient with time management and prioritizing work
  • Able to use a computer for the functions of the engine room and email
  • Able to be certified for Haz-Mat
  • Knowledge of basic Standard Operating Procedures is a plus
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to work 8-12 hour shifts is required. This position may require occasional on-call availability outside of regularly scheduled work hours and may also require working independently without supervision at times.
  • Plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold (non-weather related), and working near moving mechanical parts
  • Noise level in the work areas can be loud, especially in the compressor room
  • Will be regularly exposed to outside weather in all conditions
  • Will be regularly exposed to chemicals used in the plant and for maintenance processes
  • Able to climb ladders and stairs regularly
  • Able to climb under and over piping and equipment as needed
  • Food manufacturing environment
