Job summary

Tyson Foods in Waterloo, IA is seeking an Industrial Maintenance Technician to operate and maintain ammonia refrigeration and related plant systems. You will monitor equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and support safety programs in a fast-paced food production environment.

Responsibilities include troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and controls systems, maintaining documentation in CMMS, and collaborating with operations staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional RETA/IIAR training preferred.
• 3+ years in industrial ammonia refrigeration and equipment rooms.
• Ability to read P&ID diagrams and use testing tools; strong safety knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain ammonia refrigeration, HCFC, hot water, and related systems.
• Monitor equipment for safety and efficiency; document maintenance activities.
• Follow OSHA PSM and EPA RMP standards; troubleshoot mechanical/electrical/refrigeration issues.
• Collaborate with team, management, and contractors; participate in training.
• Support emergency response readiness and maintain CMMS records.

Job Details:

Join a critical operations team responsible for maintaining and supporting essential plant utility systems that help ensure safe, efficient, and reliable production. This role offers the opportunity to work with advanced ammonia refrigeration systems, HCFC systems, hot water systems, air compressors, waste treatment operations, and other key facility infrastructure.

The successful candidate will play an important role in maintaining operational excellence while working in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. Team members have opportunities to expand their technical expertise, participate in specialized training programs, and contribute to workplace safety initiatives. This position is ideal for individuals who are self-motivated, safety-focused, and eager to continue developing their skills in industrial maintenance and refrigeration operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain ammonia refrigeration, HCFC, hot water, air compressor, and waste treatment systems.
• Support safe and efficient facility operations through proactive equipment monitoring and maintenance.
• Follow OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA Risk Management Program (RMP) standards.
• Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, and related systems.
• Collaborate effectively with team members, management, operations personnel, and contractors.
• Participate in ongoing training and technical skill development.
• Support emergency response preparedness and safety programs as required.
• Utilize maintenance and business software systems to document and manage work activities.

Requirements

• Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Formal training from an Air-conditioning Refrigeration Technical School is a plus. RETA and IIAR Ammonia Refrigeration training is preferred.
• Experience: 3 plus years Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration and equipment room experience in a food plant preferred; experience in the Air Conditioning Refrigeration industry a plus; industrial maintenance experience a plus. Team members must have working knowledge of electrical testing equipment and basic hand and power tools. Extensive knowledge of Industrial Safety procedures is preferred. RETA I Certification and Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification preferred. Must be able to read and understand Equipment and System P ID s. Must be able to pass a HAZ-Mat physical and pass the training to be certified as an Emergency Responder Technician Level and participate on the Emergency Response Team.
• Computer Skills: Must have a working knowledge of Windows based software such as Microsoft Excel and Word and the ability to learn and apply Tyson SAP- PM Plant Maintenance system.
• Communication Skills: Must be able speak read and write fluently in English; and possess a high level of written and verbal communication skills critical thinking and problem-solving skills; and interact professionally with all levels of the organization. Travel: Approximately one to two weeks travel per year is possible for training.
• Supervisory Responsibilities: None
• Special Skills: Knowledge of Industrial Maintenance including hydraulics pneumatics PLC s Motor Controls and shop equipment operation desired. Experience with Air Conditioning Refrigeration systems operation and maintenance a plus.
• Sponsorship is not available. Must reside in the United States.
