Randstad USA is seeking a Refrigeration Project Engineer to lead CAPEX ammonia refrigeration projects across multiple sites in the United States. Responsibilities include budgeting, scope development, system design, and contractor management to ensure safe, efficient operation.

The role requires hands-on experience with AutoCAD, P&IDs, and complex thermodynamic calculations, plus travel (up to 85% monthly). OSHA PSM, IIAR, and ASHRAE knowledge is essential; a Bachelor's degree is required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in design, construction, and operation of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and ability to read P&IDs.
  • Experience with complex engineering calculations (load balances, relief valve designs).
  • Strong familiarity with OSHA PSM, IIAR, and ASHRAE codes; proven project management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead ammonia refrigeration projects from inception to close-out, including budgeting and scope development.
  • Design high-efficiency refrigeration systems and select equipment.
  • Ensure adherence to OSHA PSM, IIAR, ASHRAE standards.
  • Participate in PHAs, MOC, and root cause investigations of leaks.
  • Perform thermodynamic calculations for loads, ventilation, and energy balances.
  • Travel to facility sites to oversee construction and troubleshoot issues.

Job Summary

A Refrigeration Project Engineer is needed for a leading food manufacturing organization. The Refrigeration Project Engineer is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of CAPEX ammonia refrigeration projects across all corporate sites. This role oversees the entire project lifecycle, from budgeting and scope development to system design, contractor management, and project close-out. Additionally, the engineer ensures that all refrigeration systems operate safely and effectively while promoting a strong culture of workplace safety.

Candidates must possess comprehensive experience in the design, construction, and operation of industrial ammonia refrigeration and thermodynamic systems. Proficiency in AutoCAD, the ability to read P&IDs, and experience completing complex engineering calculations - such as load balances and relief valve designs - are required. Strong familiarity with OSHA PSM, IIAR, and ASHRAE codes is essential, alongside proven project management skills and the flexibility to travel frequently. This job can be remote with anticipated 85% travel monthly.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development, budgeting, scope creation, and contractor execution of ammonia refrigeration projects from inception to close-out
  • Design high-efficiency refrigeration systems, including equipment selection, pipe sizing, system controls, and piping diagrams
  • Ensure all system designs and constructions adhere strictly to OSHA PSM, RMP, IIAR, and ASHRAE standards
  • Participate in Process Hazards Analysis (PHAs), Management of Change (MOC) procedures, and root cause investigations for reported ammonia leaks
  • Perform necessary thermodynamic system calculations, including room and process heat loads, ventilation requirements, and mass/energy balances
  • Travel to various facility sites to oversee construction, audit PSM/RMP programs, and troubleshoot operational issues
