Job summary

The New York City Department of Correction seeks Recreation Specialists to help develop and implement Enhanced Recreation activities for people in custody, under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor.

Selected candidates will run organized group activities, engage participants to promote health, teamwork and stress reduction, and collaborate with community partners to expand programming within city jail facilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree with 24 recreation credits, including at least 18 in recreation-related areas.
  • Associate degree plus 1 year of paid experience in planning, coordinating and supervising recreation programs.
  • High school diploma plus 3 years of paid experience in planning, coordinating and supervising recreation programs.
  • Equivalency allowed: 30 credits per one year experience; must have at least 1 year or 24 credits in recreation, physical education, dance, fine arts or related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Enhanced Recreational programming for men and women in care, on housing units and in communal spaces across city jail facilities.
  • Build capacity by identifying needs, presenting ideas, and encouraging participation to promote health, wellness, teamwork.
  • Assist leadership in identifying and connecting with additional community partners.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Complete and input daily data collection of the enhanced recreation programming.
  • Participate in supervision and trainings as required.
  • Assist with special projects and related duties as assigned.

Education

Bachelor degree with recreation credits
Associate degree + 1 year experience
High school diploma + 3 years experience
Equivalent education/experience option
