The City of Takoma Park is seeking enthusiastic summer camp staff to work for the Recreation Department. There are multiple positions open at both facilities (7315 New Hampshire Ave & 7500 Maple Ave). Incumbents will assist with planning, organizing and leading a variety of camp activities including crafts, sports and more throughout the summer for ages 6-12. The typical work hours vary, as the program is open from 6:45 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. The dates for camp are June 23 - August 15, 2025 (except July 4) with additional mandatory pre-service training days in mid-June. Please note - this position is for seasonal, summer employment only. This position is not subject to membership in the AFSCME union. First resume review will begin February 28, 2025, but the position will remain open until filled.



Typical Duties include:




  • Providing customer service and general supervision of the summer camp program participants;




  • Positively enforcing discipline problems and abiding by Recreation Department Discipline policy;




  • Providing for a clean, safe and secure environment;




  • Maintaining and operating the proper use of equipment and supplies by participants;




  • Informing parents of programs, activities, and any other vital information;




  • Assisting with set-up and breakdown of the program at the beginning and end of the program;




  • Administering first-aid, if necessary;




  • Monitoring patrons, ensuring the rules are followed and that the patron's behavior is appropriate.






  • Remains energetic and active at all times and is innovative when participants are idle, restless, or unwilling to participate.






  • Notifies the director of unusual situations involving injuries, accidents, or emergencies with participants or staff.





Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to be successful are:




  • General knowledge and experience leading youth programs;




  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions;




  • Strong customer service skills;




  • Ability to provide mature leadership, have fun, be flexible, and share enthusiasm;




  • Neat and professional appearance and attitude;




  • Work effectively and communicate with the public, supervisor, and fellow employees;




  • Ability to interact effectively with all age levels, abilities, and cultural backgrounds;




  • Enjoy working with children, youth and young adults;




  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions;





Minimum Qualifications include:




  • Must be at least 18 years of age.




  • Must possess or have the ability to possess Standard CPR/First Aid certifications.





The hourly rate for this position is expected to be between $17.95 and $18.22 per hour, and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. This position is not subject to membership in the AFSCME union.
