Recreation Program Leaders plan and coordinate organized discretionary time activities

for incarcerated individuals in a facility of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). Incumbents develop, implement, and direct a comprehensive recreational program of athletic and non-athletic activities, and related activities, under the banner of Special Subjects Programs.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

Acceptable Related Experience

Either 1. an associate's degree in physical education, recreation, recreational therapy, or a closely related recreational field* AND two years of experience directing or assisting in the direction of a scheduled, organized recreational program; Or 2. an associates degree AND three years of experience as described in #1; Or 3. a bachelor's degree or higher in physical education, recreation, recreational therapy, or a closely related recreational field;* Or 4. a bachelor's degree or higher AND one year of experience as described in #1; Or 5. four years of experience as described in #1.

• Qualifying closely related recreational field degrees are: athletic training, exercise science, kinesiology (athletic training), kinesiology (physical education), kinesiology (sports management), movement and science, health and wellness (fitness/exercise), recreation and leisure studies, recreation education, recreation management, sports management, sports medicine or therapeutic recreation.
