Recreation Assistant — Esports Memory Lanes
Provides part-time support for recreation programs, activities, leagues, tournaments, special events, Esports operations, and other department services. Assist with preparations, with program setup, participant assistance, activity supervision, equipment use, recordkeeping, cleanup, and general facility operations. Job Scope:
The Recreation Assistant performs a variety of support-level duties related to the delivery of recreation program and services. Work may include assisting with or leading assigned activities, monitoring participants and facilities, preparing equipment and supplies, collecting fees, maintaining records, and responding to routine participants or customers. Employees receive general instructions from their assigned supervisor but may be expected to complete assigned duties or oversee an activity area with limited on-site supervision.
The position does not have formal supervisory authority over other employees. The Recreation Assistant may provide basic direction or assistance to volunteers during programs or special events. The quality of work performed directly affects participant safety, program quality, customer service, and the public’s experience with the Parks and Recreation Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Schedule, organize and implement year-round recreational programs and activities.
- Instruct, conduct and participate in programs/activities; prepare schedule of events and secure necessary supplies for daily and special activities; participate in planned programs.
- Assist in planning, scheduling, organizing and conducting various activities and services for the special recreational needs of the group being served.
- Communicate and work with community groups, governmental and private agencies to obtain services, programs and support; solicit community groups, governmental and private agencies to obtain services, programs and support; solicit community participation and volunteers.
- Cooperate with public and private groups; communicate effectively with a wide variety of persons in conducting activities.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of records including attendance, registration, vandalism, incidents and equipment use of records.
- Maintain safety standards and specialized safety requirements.
- Resolve disciplinary problems according to established guidelines; refer more difficult situations to appropriate authorities.
- Perform evening, some holiday, and weekend work.
- Administer first aid and CPR as needed.
- Assist in budget preparation for programs and activities planned.
- Assist in the general promotions of the programs and activities.
- Open and close facilities; schedule and prepare facilities for use and set up recreation areas for public use, performing routine custodial work as needed.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Training, or Experience to Start:
- Reliable transportation.
- Must have a working phone number at which the employee can be contacted directly.
- Follow oral and written orders.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees and the general public.
- Must have knowledge of accounting procedures in handling large sums of money.
- Evening, weekend and holiday work.
- Agree and pass a background check.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of recreation programs, activities, sports, Esports, special events, or facility operations.
- Knowledge of basic customer service practices and the ability to work professionally with participants, parents, spectators, volunteers, staff, and the general public.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, schedules, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Ability to organize assigned tasks, prepare program areas, and complete duties with limited supervision.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with individuals of different ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
- Ability to assist with or lead assigned activities in a safe, organized, and positive manner.
- Ability to learn and properly use recreation equipment, technology, software, and other tools related to the assigned work area.
- Ability to maintain attendance records, registration information, incident reports, equipment records, and other basic documentation.
- Ability to recognize safety concerns, respond appropriately to incidents, and request assistance when necessary.
- Ability to collect fees and handle payments as assigned.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, volunteers, community partners, and the public.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Guidelines:
Guidelines include City of Sedalia and Parks and Recreation Department policies and procedures, employee and safety manuals, program and facility rules, activity schedules, equipment instructions, cash-handling procedures, emergency response procedures, and directions provided by the assigned supervisor. Some guidelines are specific, while others require the employee to use good judgment based on the situation. Unusual situations, serious participant concerns, safety issues, or matters outside the employee’s authority are referred to the assigned supervisor.
Complexity:
The work includes a variety of duties that may change depending on the assigned program, activity, event, season, or facility. The Recreation Assistant must be able to manage routine responsibilities while responding to participant needs, schedule changes, equipment concerns, behavioral issues, and unexpected situations. The employee uses judgment to determine the appropriate response within established policies and procedures and seeks assistance from a supervisor when needed.
Principal Working Relationships:
- Internal: IT/Esports Specialist, Bowling Center Superintendent, Maintenance Supervisor, Kitchen Supervisor, Operations Coordinator, and other Parks & Recreation staff.
- External: General public, rental clients, vendors, and contractors as needed.
Physical Demands:
- Some tasks may involve physically demanding works such as standing for prolonged periods, lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling heavy objects or materials (20-50 lbs.).
- The person in this position will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis in accordance with the City’s Alcohol & Controlled Substance Use, Abuse and Testing Policy.

Work is primarily performed indoors in a recreation facility, with occasional work outdoors (sidewalks, trash removal, snow/ice clearing). The position may be exposed to cleaning chemicals, machinery with moving parts, noise, and varying temperatures. Use of protective gear (gloves, goggles, masks) is required when appropriate.
