At RWJBarnabas Health, Recovery Specialists become part of a purpose-driven environment where lived experience, compassion, and peer support create meaningful change every day. As a Recovery Specialist, you will provide non-clinical individual and group support to develop a recovery care plan, educate individuals on recovery models, and cultivate supportive tools to enhance recovery. You will work closely with the individual’s multidisciplinary care team and community-based organizations to connect patients with additional recovery support services that best fit their needs.

A typical day for a Recovery Specialist may include:
  • Engaging clients and patients with non-clinical support, building trust and connection by sharing your own lived experience with recovery
  • Conducting client and patient screenings to gather relevant history and documenting information within the electronic health record in accordance with IFPR guidelines
  • Creating individualized recovery support plans based on patient needs, screening results, and social determinants of health
  • Connecting clients and patients with non-clinical, SDOH-related services and community resources that support their recovery
  • Serving as a positive role model by establishing and maintaining supportive relationships with clients, patients, and their families
  • Educating individuals on how to navigate treatment, social services, and recovery support systems, while coordinating with IFPR Patient Navigators and hospital staff to ensure the navigation to treatment is successful
  • Empowering individuals to make self-determined, self-directed choices about their recovery pathway
  • Facilitating recovery support meetings and groups designed to engage, motivate, and empower participants
  • Completing timely, accurate documentation and reporting to support grant compliance and continuity of care
This role might be for you if:
  • You draw on your own lived experience with recovery to inspire hope and connection in others
  • Clear, compassionate communication defines how you interact with clients, families, and colleagues
  • You enjoy building trust and rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds and circumstances
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, including attention to grammar and detail, to help you deliver accurate documentation
  • Adaptability allows you to manage changing priorities while maintaining professionalism
  • Continuous learning and professional growth motivate you
  • Collaborative teamwork is something you value and actively contribute to as part of a multidisciplinary care team

To be considered for this Recovery Specialist opportunity, you are passionate about serving as a role model, advocate, and motivator for individuals navigating recovery from substance‑use disorder.

  • This position offers a full‑time schedule of three 12‑hour day shifts per week.
  • You hold a High School Diploma or GED equivalent and have a minimum of four (4) years of experience in the guiding principles of recovery that help individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self‑directed life, and reach their full potential.
  • You are able to travel within a 60‑mile radius of the assigned hospital for cross coverage when needed.
  • You hold or are able to obtain, within six months of employment, a Nationally Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (NCPRSS) certification through the NAADAC organization.
  • Bilingual ability, previous experience as a Recovery Specialist or in a related role, and knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and Outlook are preferred.
