Job summary

A community health organization in West Virginia is seeking a Peer Recovery Support Specialist to develop and implement Recovery Plans for individuals struggling with substance use or severe mental illness. The role includes providing educational support and advocating for the individual’s recovery journey. Ideal candidates will have experience in recovery, appropriate certifications, and strong communication skills. A valid driver's license and a minimum of two years of recovery experience are required.

Qualifications

  • Certification as a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Peer Recovery Support Specialist or Severe Mental Illness (SMI) Peer Recovery Support Specialist is required.
  • Must have a minimum of two years of successful recovery from an SUD or SMI diagnosis.
  • Valid driver's license in good standing required.
  • Certified Recovery Specialist (CPRS) certification from APCB is required.
  • All positions require a valid driver’s license and pre-employment drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a Recovery Plan with individuals.
  • Educate individuals on treatment navigation and recovery support.
  • Provide recovery support services based on individual preferences.
  • Support individuals through various stages of change in their recovery.
  • Assist individuals in accessing community recovery services and maintaining social functioning.
  • Maintain ethical boundaries and positive role modeling in interactions with program participants.
  • Maintain relationships to support engagement and retention in services for up to one year.

The potential employee will have the ability assess and interpret information related to population; have knowledge of the symptoms of the disability/disorder and ability to recognize exacerbation of symptoms; have a general understanding of treatment needs; knowledge of available treatment resources and appropriate use; Population-specific communication skills.

Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with the individual, develop a Recovery Plan which should include culturally competent and relevant services that identifies goals with measurable objectives, assesses strengths, can be used to work towards those goals, identifies barriers that can inhibit goal attainment and monitors the progress made attaining those goals;
  • Educate the individuals on how to appropriately navigate treatment, social service and recovery support systems;
  • Provide recovery support services based on the individual’s preference and his/her assessed needs;
  • Support individuals as they move through the stages of change to encourage them in their recovery;
  • Assist individuals with accessing recovery support services in the community;
  • Help Safe at Home individuals maintain healthy community, family and social functioning.
  • Be a positive role model by appropriately sharing experiential knowledge, hope and skills;
  • Maintain ethical boundaries with Safe at Home Program individuals;
  • Maintain relationships with the individual in order to assist him/her in the treatment engagement and retention process;
  • Reinforce, guide and ensure the individual that recovery is possible and is built on multiple strengths, coping abilities and the resources of each individual;
  • Assist the individual participating in Safe at Program with gaining skills and resources needed to initiate and maintain recovery;
  • Assist in establishing and sustaining a social and physical environment supportive of recovery;
  • Enhance identification and participation in the recovery community;
  • Advocate for appropriate and effective community treatment and recovery;
  • Empower individuals to make self-determined and self-directed choices about their recovery pathway;
  • Provide support with face to face sessions and/or telephone support based on the individual’s personal choice;
  • Work collaboratively with the Case Manager to ensure the individual engages in services up to one year;
  • Maintain follow-up one year after starting at Safe at Home program;
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Must have a minimum of two (2) years of successful recovery from an SUD or SMI diagnosis and certification as a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Peer Recovery Support Specialist and/or as a Severe Mental Illness (SMI) Peer Recovery Support Specialist .

SUD Peer Recovery Support Specialist s are required to receive certification as a National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (NCPRSS) from the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals (NCCAP).

SMI Peer Recovery Support Specialist are required to receive certification from the Addiction Professional Certification Board (APCB) as a Certified Recovery Specialist (CPRS)
