Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; two years’ switchboard experience preferred.
  • Strong reading, writing and verbal communication skills; ability to work under highly stressful conditions.
  • Working knowledge of computers.

Responsibilities

  • Answers and responds to incoming telephone calls promptly and in a pleasant, courteous, and clear manner.
  • Screen calls before transferring them to units and request patient confidentiality number before transferring.
  • Use intercom pages appropriately and limit pages to emergencies, requests, or announcements.
  • Screen visitors before allowing them to proceed past the hospital lobby and ensure check-in/out.
  • Support the hospital’s safety and security programs and comply with policies.
  • Remain calm and efficient in crisis situations.
  • Work with the Intake department and follow procedures for prospective patients.
  • Keep lobby areas clean and tidy.
  • Sign for and receive incoming deliveries and notify the receiver.
  • Greet and respond to applicants for employment and instruct on how to apply online.
  • Read daily communication logs for new messages.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The receptionist operates a multi-line switchboard to relay incoming, outgoing, and inter-office calls to their appropriate destination. Greets and screens all visitors before allowing them to proceed throughout the hospital. Acts as an information center to all visitors. The receptionist provides clerical support for hospital personnel. Additionally, the Receptionist;

  • Answers and responds to incoming telephone calls promptly and in a pleasant, courteous, and clear manner.
  • Carefully screen calls before transferring them to the units and always requests patient’s confidentiality number before transferring.
  • Uses pages appropriately over the intercom system, speaking clearly and in a moderate tone; limits pages to emergencies, caller requests, or authorized announcements.
  • Screens all visitors before allowing them to proceed past the hospital lobby, making sure all visitors check in and out.
  • Supports the hospital’s safety and security programs and complies with policies and procedures.
  • Remains calm and efficient in crisis situations.
  • Works closely with the Intake department and follows procedures when prospective patients arrive.
  • Keeps the hospital lobby areas clean and tidy at all times.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Must be able to perform assignments with minimal supervision;
  • Must be able to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;
  • Must be able to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;
  • Must be capable of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;
  • Must have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Must have a working knowledge of computers.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITON:
  • Must be able to complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing.
  • Must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to the reception desk within first three (3) months of employment.
  • Must complete all mandatory in-services annually.
  • Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray tri-annually thereafter.
  • Must be at least 21 years old
