Job summary

Veolia North America is hiring for a hazardous waste handler responsible for moving solids and liquids, performing tasks under supervision, and ensuring safe operations in a hazardous environment. The role requires adherence to PPE policies and proper handling of materials using various equipment.

  • Operate 5-gas meter and inspect for discrepancies; maintain clean work area.

Job Description
Position Purpose

Responsible for performing a variety of routine hazardous and non-hazardous waste tasks in the movement of solids and liquids. Under direct supervision, tasks could include all types of manual labor in cleaning and decontamination operations, vacuum projects and handling, packing, repack/depack, unloading and loading containers for processing at site or transportation to appropriate facilities using various types of mobile equipment. Because of the hazardous material processed through the incinerator feed systems, this position has been designated as safety sensitive, per Arkansas Constitutional Amendment XCVIII 3.6.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities
  • Load and unload various size containers (totes, drums, tankers, trailers. etc.) either manually or using various types of equipment following Veolia safe unloading practices.
  • Adhere to all PPE policies. (This position requires the use of supplied breathing air for some activities.)
  • Review manifest. Identify, label, weigh, sample, inspect, stage, and store containers by DOT compatibility as required.
  • Recognize various sizes of containers.
  • Recognize various labels and markings.
  • Communicate discrepancies to supervision immediately upon discovery.
  • 5-gas meter operation.
  • Perform building walkthrough identifying and correcting any noted RCRA deficiencies.
  • Construct boxes and/or fiber containers and stacks, labels, and loads containers.
  • Repack / depack per supervisor direction.
  • Use a variety of tools such as impact wrenches, shovels, jackhammers, etc.
  • Transport hazardous waste materials from storage facilities within the facility as directed.
  • Assist in completing all necessary paperwork for processing materials to include transportation of materials to and from various locations.
  • Perform container inventory as directed.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area.
  • Inspect material handling equipment as directed and required.
  • Assist in the loading/unloading of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials at designated sites utilizing appropriate equipment for which you are appropriately trained.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Background
  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) preferred
  • Prior work experience of 3 to 6 months in the hazardous waste or chemical industry in a related position with proficiency in handling forklifts and a variety of tools preferred
  • At least 6 months in current position
  • No unsatisfactory attendance issues within the past 12 months
  • No disciplinary action within the past 12 months
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to communicate through reading and writing
  • Trained in the use of material handling equipment
  • Ability to operate a tablet for description entry
  • Ability to operate a barcode scanner for waste tracking
Required Certification/Licenses/Training
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER training preferred
  • DOT Handling Hazardous Materials
  • Successfully complete VGS Learning Paths training including exams with a minimum score of 80% within 6 months of award.
