  • Prior experience as a successful reading teacher.
  • Ability to assist in development of school improvement plans.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the point of contact for the reading program; support observations.
  • Assist teachers in planning, delivering, and assessing high-quality literacy instruction.
  • Develop reading instructional programs across all grade levels.

  • Develop and update reading curriculum and pacing guides aligned with SOLs.
  • Coordinate long- and short-term reading program planning.
  • Provide instructional services and leadership to schools.
  • Support remediation and summer programs and manage assigned budgets.
  • Keep leadership informed about reading programs and instruction; collaborate with community groups.

READING SPECIALIST
Overview

Sussex County Public Schools is seeking talented and creative individuals who want to prepare leaders for tomorrow by implementing a comprehensive literacy program through coaching, supporting, and guiding teachers to develop best-practice, research-based strategies for literacy instruction. The Reading Specialist will support teachers in the development and implementation of lesson plans, analyze data for planning, and be responsible for supporting students individually and through small-group instruction.

Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Operations
Contract Type: 11-Month (220 Days)
Requirements
  1. Master’s degree inReading or completed anapprovedreading specialist program.
  2. Hold the Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in reading; supervisory experience preferred.
  3. Possess leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively as a team member with the superintendent, central office staff, principals, teachers, parents, and community.
  4. Knowledgeable in research-based instructional programs, Virginia SOLs, supervision of instruction, curriculum, and daily school operations.
  5. Prior experience as a successful reading teacher.
  6. Possess the ability to assist in the development of school improvement plans.
  7. Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
Essential Duties
  • Serve as the point of contact for the reading program to include and assist with peer observations under the direction of the principal and assistant principal.
  • Support teachers in planning, delivering, and assessing high-quality literacy instruction and complete essential reports as required.
  • Assist with the development of reading instructional programs across all grade levels.
  • Assist in the development of school improvement plans.
  • Collect, disaggregate and maintain division data relevant to the elementary and secondary school reading programs.
  • Develop, maintain and update reading curriculum and pacing guides as needed to align with the Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Assist with development of Student Reading Plans after collaborating with teachers and analyzing data.
  • Coordinate and guide long and short reading instructional program planning.
  • Provide instructional assistance and support to schools by keeping abreast of educational developments and provide leadership in bringing innovative programs into the schools.
  • Provide instructional services or support to students.
  • Assist with the planning and coordinating of remedial and summer school programs.
  • Develop, manage, and administer various budgets as assigned.
  • Update the principal on reading programs and instruction.
  • Work collaboratively with agencies, community and parent groups on a variety of committee and advisory boards relative to student needs and services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and assume such responsibilities or special projects as directed by the superintendent.

Terms of Employment

8 hours per day, 11 months (220 days)

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of Sussex County School Board’s policy manual.
