Introduction

The Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive, language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. Rooted in a bilingual education approach, we ensure full access to American Sign Language and English across comprehensive academic, extracurricular, and student life programs. In partnership with families and communities, we empower students to think critically and develop a sense of self and belonging.

This is an 11-month position. The Shift hours are Monday through Friday (12:00 AM - 8:00 AM).

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

The RCYCP Supervisor is the supervisory level of work over those providing guidance to deaf and hard of hearing students by serving as a mentor and role model, offering advice and assistance with everyday life skills and providing referrals as appropriate to other staff at the Maryland School for the Deaf. Employees in this classification supervise RCYCP.

POSITION DUTIES

The supervisor is responsible for creating work schedules for staff including substitutes when necessary. Develop schedules for special events such as weekend tournaments or snow days, coordinating field trips, vehicle reservations and food service requests.

The incumbent is responsible for reviewing and approving staff timesheets and overtime requests, planning work schedules for special events such as weekend tournaments or snow days, coordinating field trips, vehicle reservations, and food service requests.

The supervisor acts as liaison between the school and parents/guardians, and works with specialists with regards to the student's physical or emotional needs.

The supervisor is responsible for conducting building inspections and reporting maintenance issues as well as maintaining inventory records. Assesses emergency and crisis situations, makes appropriate contacts and referrals, and provides interim emergency medical and other assistance until specialized assistance is available.

The incumbent conducts staff evaluations two times per year, attends Employee Performance Review meetings as needed and attends staff meetings with the school management team and dorm staff.

The supervisor is responsible for creating, executing and maintaining documentation of training for staff development on a regular basis to meet DHS and MDH requirements.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Student Life.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience: Eight years of experience, four years of experience providing guidance to deaf and hard of hearing youth and assisting them with everyday life skills in a residential setting, one year must have been of supervisory experience, and an additional four years of experience working in a residential program.
  2. Notes: 1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Deaf Education, Special Education or the Human Science field and four years of experience providing guidance to deaf and hard of hearing youth and assisting them with everyday life skills in a residential setting for the required experience. 2. Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of sixty credit hours for each year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.
  3. Fluency in American Sign Language is required for this position.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
  1. Employees in this classification will be required to obtain and maintain RCYCP certification.
  2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
  3. Employees in this classification will be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first-aid training leading to certification. These certifications must be kept current as a requirement of residential child care licensure by the Maryland Department of Human Services.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Employees in this classification are required to be proficient in American Sign Language and in written English.
  2. Employees in this classification will be required to pass a medical examination and an annual screening for tuberculosis as a requirement of residential child care licensure by the Maryland Department of Human Services.
  3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  4. Employees in this classification will be required to apply for a criminal background check as a requirement of the Family Law Article, Section 5-551, Annotated Code of Maryland.
  5. Employees in this classification are required to be certified by the State Board for the Certification of Residential Child Care Program Professionals (the Board) within the first 180 of employment.
  6. Employees in this classification will be required to be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first-aid training leading to certification. These certifications must be kept current as a requirement of residential child care licensure by the Maryland Department of Human Services.
  7. Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.
